  • Rear mech advise – Shimano SLX SAINT?

    Morning all.
After destroying my SLX rear mech yesterday I am in the market for one.
I had no issues with the SLX one other than jockey wheel wear and slight play in the bearing.

I currently run a 2*9 setup and mostly ride cross country with some trips to DH tracks. Bikes a 160mm travel setup fairly beefy.

The saint looks lovely but does it have any benifits over the SLX?

Can it be used effectivly with a SLX shifter?

    Thanks all

    Joe

I went down that route, but found the Saint shifting decidely ‘clunky’ compared to the dainty way the SLX danced over the cassette. Something to do with the stronger spring tension on the Saint. It also always seemed to be out of tune at one end of the cassette or ‘tother, so it’s now in my spares box and I bought another SLX.

Shame, cos the Saint did get a lot of admiring glances and definitely added to my gnaar factor in the car park…

Running a Saint 9spd rear here (with SLX shifter).
The jockey wheels on the previous SLX rear fell apart.
Hoping the Saint ones lasts longer…

Oh, it’s a lot lighter if you’re looking for other benefits/excuses.

SLX mech is fine. If you want better shifting then invest in the shifter end, with good cables, and better jockeys (Tacx, Tiso et al).

I’ve been running a saint 9spd for a few years.
As said above, very positive (clunky) shifting due to the uprated spring.
Not as smooth as an XTR but that’s not the point of it.
Had a few bashes and bangs but no issues with durability.
Not had any issues with the set up though, and shifts perfectly mated to a Saint shifter.

9sp Saint here (shifter + short cage mech running 1×9) – tough as f*ck, reliable shifting. Recommended
