anyone experienced in these things ? the sign writing is really old and hard to remove even with a heat gun and scraper . just wondered whether there are any other methods which won't wreck the paintwork?

have seen suggestions about spaying with wd40 beforehand and leaving to soak . Also wondering about using a very powerful jetwasher after warming them up.

Add white spirit to your list of *don't try* solutions. Got some old glue off my van really well, but took most of the laquer with it too, so was never shiny again.

WD40 is good for removing tar spots, so I can see a bit of logic in that suggestion.

heat gun to soften the glue under the vinyl and a plastic scraper i.e. old bank card.
work on a little bit at a time and slowly.then use some ipa to clean off the glue residue this wont damage the paint on the van/car

I used to have to take the reflective stripes of police cars. Its a nightmare. Hot air gun is your best bet.
You may be able to get a Stanley blade behind the letters and slice them off. If you can't use hot air , use boiling water and work quick.
If its original paint work thinners will be ok to remove the glue that's left. It will mark any plastic though.Posted 7 months ago # -

If its vinyl, heat the section of vinyl you are working on for maybe 1 or 2 seconds with a heatgun, then peel from a corner gently. This should prevent the vinyl breaking up into little bits and should prevent it leaving much glue behind. It does take a while. If its reflective vinyl, give up now. If you heat it until it blisters, that wont help you much either. You can remove any left over adhesive with isopropanol, or get a couple of cans of "sticky stuff remover" from a DIY store. Spray on, leave for a couple of minutes, then agitate the glue with a squeegee or window scraper. You can then scrape this off into a cloth.
If you leave the side of the van you are stripping in direct sunlight, you might not need the heatgun at all. Its not like stripping paint. Vinyl goes brittle when cold, and the heatgun is to help prevent it breaking up as you remove it.Posted 7 months ago # -
Toffee wheel in your drill (dont concentrate on one area for too long) and sticky stuff remover.
