there is only one pub worth going to; the hobgoblin (or ale house as it’s now called). More decent beers and ciders than you can shake a stick at, and a rabbit warren of little areas to sit. Love it.

    or look here!

Litten Tree and the Purple Turtle were our go-to’s when I had friends down that way. That was over ten years ago now mind, could be a car park and affordable housing by now.

I remember the Purple Turtle before it got bulldozed for the Oracle. Proper little dive bar. The new version was a pale imitation.

The Ale House (formerly Hobgoblin) for real beer.

For curry; Pappadams on kings road or the Thai over the road.

    I remember the Purple Turtle

Likewise, pretty sure it was there in the late 80s when I was at Uni there….

Its still there and bigger than ever but yes the old one was far better as the new one is more of a trendy bar now.

Nags Head, Alehouse and The Allied for the town centre.

only been once with work 2 or 3 years ago, and the only place that stuck out as being enjoyable to drink in for me was the purple turtle.

    Sweeney and Todd pie shop

This place used to sell decent pie based meals when I lived in Reading

Pretty sure it started off as a pub, which closed in 91 IIRC. Used to get a pie and a pink for £5.95.

Eldon Arms. The Retreat. Alehouse. Sweeney & Todd. South Street Arts Centre do good ales on a Friday night now.
Piwnica Polish pub does some great food and Tutu’s Ethiopian Table does some curries if you want something a bit different.

Also, make sure you check out the Grumpy Goat in the Harris Arcade. Huge range of interesting beers.

Loving that link cubist, thats been an hour of entertainment!

To the OP, Nags Head (my local) is a short stroll from the centre. Bhoj is good for a curry (5mins back in to town)
