Just wondering if anyone has had a go at stripping back a powdercoated frame to get a raw finish? If you have any pictures and tips would be good to see. I presume that you use some lacquer after the strip back to protect the metal.

Havent done it on a MTB frame but did do it on a motorbike frame and the coating was a bitch to shift I regretted starting after about 10 minutes but it was too late by then. My opinion dont bother powdercoat is tough

I did mine - stripped the paint with nitromors and a wire brush and polished it with 3M polishing pads. Came up a treat.
It is ti though, if you are doing this to ali the wire brush may have to be avoided. I guess a clear lacquer would be needed to ptotect from corosion too.

If you do a steel or ali frame by hand at home, the corrosion will have set in before you get the whole thing finished. The best way would be to take it to a metal finishers and they could chemical dip it and laquer it before it corrodes and before anyone says it, aluminium does corrode.

40 mpg powder coat isnt paint its polyester plastic I think. Nitromors doesnt touch it or at least diidnt touch the powder coat I stripped.

My mates 456 looked like it had been painted with matt emulsion only it wasnt quite as good a finish

Cheers, it is alu so I think I'll try and find somewhere that can dip it and lacquer it for me

"Raw" is usually that, raw, left to oxidise. But if you want to maintain a shiny finish it needs lacquered.

Look up chemical stripping on yell.com
An acid bath will strip it in no time, & cost you about £10-£15.
Dont go expecting Lynskey / Van Nicholas levels of beauty afterwards though, at least not without lots of hard work.Posted 2 years ago #
