Different axle width & Chainline IIRC (narrower on road cranksets)

Thats strange, I am using XT cranks with a HT2 BB that has road printed on it. (one of the cheapies from the CRC flood sale)

yes it will work,if its HT2.as it’s HT2 axle width (and thus chain line)is dictated by the crank axle, not BB.
    and yes I’ve done it.
    no.if its sq taper,or octalink.

    Right, good stuff.

Sheldon says any HT2 cranks with work with any HT2 BB, but I done some googlin’ and could not confirm this.

I thought maybe the cups would be of different depth.

My road HT2 BB doesn’t have any spacers, my MTB one does. I assume the road BB would fit the threads/axle etc but you need to space it out correctly for the MTB BB shell width and mech type.

The only difference is the length of the plastic tube in between the cups. I have an Ulterga BB and a XT BB in the garage. In fact, just checked, I have 3 XT BBs 😯 and an Ultegra, all brand new never fitted as I use Hope BBs in my bikes.
The cups be the same, the connecting tube is longer on the mountain one.
LX cranksets won’t go in a road bike, too long.
Road BB cups without the tube can be used in a MTB

P.S. anyone want to buy a shimano HT2 BB?
