Are the cranks suitable for getting cut down/shortened?

I know they are not hollow inside but do they thin out at the back?

Why would you want to chop them down?

You’d end up with cranks over 25mm shorter….

    Why?

175 reduces to 155 for which is right for some.

and what are you going to hang the pedals off?

New threaded holes that you’d drill and tap after shortening the crank, I’d imagine…

Yep – Highpath Engeering have a shortening service. 155mm is good for someone around 5.0 to 5.3 in height (27ish inseam).

Anyhow – anyone got a set to see if there is enough meat on the back next to the existing hole?

    this is taken from

    zoomed and cropped.

You can see that the forging starts a recess just where the white circular sticker is.
Using the thread diameter as a scale you should be able to work out the length available.

Earl – Ive just been in the LBS and he had a set of these in the cabinet so I asked him to dig them out.

The arm thickness starts to taper about 10mm from the edge of the pedal threads. There is still a quite substantial amount of metal but about 20mm away from the existing hole (155mm distance) its down to about 10mm from 15mm at the pedal thread area.

    HTH.

Bummer. They will be too thin i.e Highpath refuses to cut them down if there is virtually any reduction at all even when I say they will be for light xc/city use. Probably the best thing.

    Thanks very much Stoner.
