Is there some sort of pocket, portable hard drive type thing that can also copy or download straight from a SD card? Something that doesn’t need a PC to transfer files? Does that make sense?

So basically, if I’m travelling, taking photos and video but won’t have access to a PC, I want to be able to save and clear what’s on the SD card to start again.

    Links appreciated to anything.

    Thanks.

    that’s no help 😉

but if you find out let me know, I’ve been googling but just seem to get normal portable drives, don’t really know what to search for?

There are stacks of things like that – “Hyperdrive”, Jobo, Epson 3000 are all different types, some better than others.

If you look on dpreview.com, under “forums” there is one called “portable storage” or something, that has heated discussion on the subject.

The Jobo Giga One is cheap but basic. Better models have a screen to view the stored files. I used to use mine at weddings to back up files in quiet moments but now can’t be @rsed – in fact, it might be for sale! Give us a shout if you’re interested.

    I use a Epson P-3000

Though I’ve just noticed how bloody expensive they are. Good though. Can’t remember what the capacity is, but it’s *a lot*. You can store and view photos, film, music (well, not view that as such) and owt else you might have.

However, SD cards are sufficiently cheap that you can buy a LOT of memory for the price of one of those drives. I have this one but, like user_removed, I never actually use it.

Probably better off getting an early cheap ASUS Eee (with car adapter) and standard portable HD duct taped to the bottom. At least you’d have portable porn digital maps and books too.

As long as your Camera works in UMS Mode (IE doesn’t need a driver and just shows up in My Computer as a Disk drive) then any recent Archo’s Series 5 Portable Media player will do that just fine.

I use an Archos 504 (40GIG) and just plug my camera in and copy the files over using it’s file browser.

Thanks everyone, just had a quick read and I’ll be looking up the suggestions later as I haven’t had time yet, at least I have some model/names to google now. Not bothered about a screen for viewing, just want to save fies on the SD cards so I can use them again, mainly going to be used for video footage that I can edit at a later date, wireless headcam just to record the more interesting bits of my travels/holidays/tours – yes I probably could get more SD cards which I’ll consider?

user-removed, might be interested but haven’t looked it up yet so don’t know anything about it, I’ll be in touch.

    Thanks 😀
