Petplan here, check the excess and whether you are getting lifetime cover or yearly. Some are quite devious in their wording, cute pup 🙂

Dog owners for 20+ year – for our first two we paid monthly. Stopped paying on current pooches after a couple of years due to premium hikes and simply put payments aside – have now accrued £5k in the process. Dogs are now 9 & 10 and in good health. When we started, premiums were something like £90/year for 2 dogs whereas quotes are now £90/month each. Might be worth paying for a puppy as they can experience problems. If dog suffers from a recurring condition, then most insurance stops paying.

Petplan lifetime cover.
Currently £30 per month. He’s 7 and a half.
Didn’t claim at all until,last year. Due to,knackered hips and back and an incident involving him eating a wad of baby wipes in the woods he’s cost us thousands in the last 12 months and his medication costs more than the premium every month at the moment so we are getting it back…

Not Direct Line….. the gits took our money for 10 years for our dogs and then said oh sorry we don’t cover dogs of 11 years or more!!! we’ve got 2 and the premiums we’re becoming pretty eye watering..

I would seriously consider in the future (for a non pedigree dog) popping the money in an account instead of with an insurance company. It is a gamble but half the time your insurance co won’t pay out because the excess is pretty much the same as the vet bill for the more regular/ maintenance and non scary stuff.

Once you are into transplants and chronic medication which is probably not covered, the end is nigh anyway.

We’ve put the money in premium bonds so reasonably quick access and better payback than bank interest. Once you take excess and non-recurring treatments into account, there’s little benefit – few payout after 8 years too.

Pet plan, make sure it’s lifetime cover. It’s all very well people saying just put cash aside but you won’t know when you will need it. My puppy (mastif mix) had lungworm which the vet failed to diagnose despite me taking her 3x with concerns for her breathing, eventually diagnosed aged 10 months, had an opportunistic bacterial infection on top, took 6 months before her chest cleared,she very nearly died, total treatment costs 2.5k. My boy staffy had uvulitis, had to go to eye specialist total costs £1200. He’s just turned 3.
