Read a few topics on here and online about folk starting up mobile / home cycle repairs and got quite abit of info already, it looks like whether your repairing / servicing one bike a week or 5 a day most folk are saying you need some public liability insurance.
From what I’ve read there’s a few on here who are mobile / work from home mechanics, do you all have public liability insurance? Do you not bother and hope you never need it? I’m guessing if you haven’t got any and something goes tits up then your pretty much screwed!?
I haven’t looked into it yet so was after a little bit of info before I start … is there a certain company folk use? Does the price vary depending on how much work your gonna be doing? Rough idea of price? Does it help if your a member of British Cycling, it looks like their cover is for the cyclist / coach rather than the mechanic.

    Cheers

in all honesty it depends what exactly you are doing, fixing a few bikes for mates for a bit of cash is one thing, if you’re actually starting a business and charging you should be insured for public liability, it protects you as much as the customer, and if your charging then it’s a business and you should have an accountant and declare the income.

i started a shop 5 months ago, specialising in repairs mainly, i used a company called “one solution” for all the shop insurance although having now joined the “federation of small business” when it’s up for renewal i will seriously look at their recommended option as being a member of the FSB sometimes gets you discount.

Other things to consider is what is covering any customers bikes and parts at your place? The way things are going it would probably make you a bit of a theft target.

Have a look at simply business, not sure if it’ll do the job but it’s where I normally direct independents too when it’s something I can find a home for at work.
