Myself and a mate thought we'd try singlespeeding last night, so we left our gearing in the middle ring and at No4 at the back giving a ratio of approx 2:1. We both really enjoyed the frantic spinning and the stomping climbing, which forced a more thoughtful line choice in places. What type of gearing do you dedicated singlespeeders usually use?

depending on bike or state of parts rotation rather than any particular rationale. All good in different ways Occasionally 32:20 as well.

32:16 here, 32:19 in the Alps, on 26" wheels. Though I'm tempted to leave the 19T on the back and see how I cope with spinning like a bastard next time I go out.

32:18 (26") seemed to work perfectly. I spin out but can get up most hills. I keep up with people on geared bikes unless it's a forest or tarmac road descent.
My commuter is 42:14 (26") but on tarmac you don't have to worry about grip.
If you are thinking of doing it properly (and I'd give it a go even if it's only for the darkest months of winter when you drive chain clogs in minutes anyway) then I'd go for a 32 or 33 on the the front and a get hold of some cheap 16, 17 and 18t sprockets for the back to get the right gear before splashing out on something nicer.
