You don’t see too many of these for sale ! Rowan Aktinson’s F1 £8m apparently, I read a chassis sold for £6m. Can’t say I like the colour. I recall these being £300k orginally ?

A lot of very beautiful looking cars for sale at Taylor and Crawley

Didn’t he crash it and have the most expensive claim for ‘own car damage’ in history?

    [edit] he did;

£8m for a cut and shut?

@wasawas thanks for the link, the piece said he crashed it and with a value of £8m it was worth repairing it. Your link says they where £640k new and £3.5m now, seems a bit low for the valuation

I recall another was crashed on a roundabout near Woking after a mechanic took one out for a road test after servicing it. I also believe one of the F1 drivers admitted doing 150 in one on the A3

£540,000 was the original price. (I could almost recite the Autocar road test (the only one!) as a 14yr old boy)

Thanks @thegreatape. I used to know someone who bought one for his own LeMans team, he loved cars and was loaded !

Hardly going to be a financial write off if the car is worth £8M. The repair would have been a bit of a Triggers Broom job by the looks of it. Actually the journalist reckons it will go over £10M. The £8m comes from the going rate for a raciing car version of which the majority manufactured were. This road going version should be worth a few mil more.nhot to be the ultimate car ever though. Some modern cars might be quicker, but not as tactile.

Do you pay capital gains tax on car appreciation?

It was worth about £3.5m when the article was written but the classic car market has gone stratospheric in the last couple of years. There will only ever be a finite supply of these and the number of very rich people wanting one increases every day. There are people out there for whom £8-10m isn’t that much money and this’ll represent a reasonable investment.

The last couple of years it’s made sense to buy these things on finance and still see them as investments.

Will always be a sh*t colour though this one.

The majority were road cars, 70 odd vs 25 ish race ones iirc. This one is one of the highest mileage ones too, 41k, though they are saying it’s as close to a new one as you’ll get due to the extensive rebuild in ’11

Such sublime engineering purity. I wonder if anyone’s ever used the titanium toolkit?

Interesting to consider that they struggled to sell 100 including the race variants (which they only did because they weren’t selling the road versions), when the current hypercars (LaFerrari, 918 & P1) have sold over 1000 in total. The rise of the global billionaire segment…

I know who the insurer was on that claim, big big ouchie!

Lovely car, I remember it being launched and all the journalists running out of superlatives for it! It looks dated now though IMO.

Anyone want to buy a McLaren f1? I know this bloke who’ll be selling one soon, apparently he can’t get the seating position quite right… 🙂

    Edit – beaten to it!

Insurance claim is hardly a big deal when personal injury claims often go into 7 figures

However it makes a good story.

Real issue is that clearly the underwriters are not going to make the money back from one person so all premiums will rise as a consequence – however only one person will gain from the car being effectively rebuilt and now as near to a new one as can be……kerr-ching for the rich boy

The market won’t take that, you’ve just got to suck up the loss. it’s enough to utterly annihilate the personal motor book of the insurer, for some years to come frankly, but that’s not gonna get passed on to consumers. Compared to commercial property or liability claims it was small, but that’s not the point.

Saw him driving it through Oxford traffic a couple of times about 10-12 years ago, way before the big smash obviously. An absolute masterclass in engineering, but dear god, why oh why would you choose that colour?!?!

I used to work near where he lives – in stereotypical boy racer fashion I once tried to ‘race’ him in my ’89 Escort RS Turbo but he wasn’t having any of it – knew he’d met his match I imagine! 😀

Seeing Mr Bean driving a F1 is quite disturbing too

I remember an article in CAR magazine about 25 years ago when Atkinson was moaning about the cost of insurance……I guess he’s changed his mind since then.

Couldn’t hide my grin when a certain pink Floyd drummer asked if I would like to sit in his F1 GTR. I think he noticed how my eyes lit up as soon as I saw it in his ‘garage’. Was number 10 of the gtr’s made. Saw my first one at the NEC motor show when I was a kid.
