Be interested to know whats under the bonnet of the Green one that the Harris family race against the standard yellow mexico.

Just had a look on ebay for restored Mexicos ,prices anywhere between £12 and £23K 😯

unovolo, I suspect it’s pretty much the same engine as the one they put into the show/program car. The standard Mexcio engine was pretty dull to be frank, around 88bhp IRC. With the modding and twin 40 carbs you can easily get that up to 140-150bhp perhaps slightly more. So, if you think of the difference almost double, that would produce the time gap between the two cars head to head.

I had various engines in mine, several cross flows and a rather expensive and disappointing BDA. The best was one I built using a Swaymar cylinder head, went exceptionally well much better than the BDA until a conrod broke and destroyed an expensive engine. I noticed on the rebuild, that the Harris’s used a steel conrod as opposed to the original cast iron – these cost about a grand a set alone!

I would hazard a guess that you could spend 4-5K on a standard engine to bring it up to the above spec. It’s so much cheaper to modify engines these days – a few hundred for re-mapping!

It’s actually a damn good car show. Like a more grown up version of that thing with mike and edd.

TBH I wish they’d shown more of the refurb, as a hell of a lot of work must have gone into it, than the say the silly “under ground” car meet bit. As much as Mike and Ed show is annoying, the mechanics bit is the part I enjoy (mechanical numpty)

Agreed, re: showing more of the refurb.
That shell was in a shocking state.
I like the US programs where they blast the shell with crushed walnut shells to get it bare metal without taking too much strength out.

    But, Mk2 RS2000 for me. 😉
Although that blue Mk1 RS2000 that was in shot a few times last night…gorgeous.

    I need pics of proof!

    Sorry it took a while!

Here’s one of the AutobahnBarge, with a friends (now departed) MG in front! Not a great pic, I’m afraid, am still sorting out a load of old photos to go on to Flickr.

Pity Tom Sheppard ditched LR and went to Mercedes G-Wagens!

Enjoyed the Land Rover episode a lot more than the Mexico Episode, more interesting side stories. Boy they must use a lot of ‘new/refurbed’ kit to get em done in 8 weeks (props to Stoner?), though what the hell did the original owner do to the poor Landy to break the chassis?

..And if yout going to go to this much trouble (& no doubt expense) why not galvanise the chassis, so that it will at least last the distance. Though no doubt it’ll be sold to a collection/collector (& stored)

there could be anything in that harris build, bearing in mind there’s vids on youtube of a Harris driven drag strip Mk1. No expert but it wouldn’t surprise me if the one featured was running maybe 250bhp+ and/or loads of torque as the speed difference was massive, yet I cannot see the car itself being lightened much although i am probably wrong. The back seat’s in my Mk1 weighed next to nothing – was sound deadening to take out. You can also get some panels such as the bonnet/boot/door skins/boot skins etc in alloy, which would make a difference.
