Just been trailed – probably another in their "get reporter to do a funny sport" series.

Probably a stupid question but why do they use road type bikes for cyclocross? Would the geometry of an MTB not suit the course better – ie lower standover height for dismounting?

It started when they rode road bikes round fields in winter. standover shouldn't matter as you should be mounting and dismounting on the trot – the aim is not to stop

A motorbike would be faster again. Sports usually have rules that make them more difficult to add to the skill level require

You have to accept that cyclocross isn't mountainbiking first of all.
The courses are not that technical and vast ammounts can be powered along in the drops (so I've heard) The techy bits can often be got through quicker if you run and carry the bike rather than gear down and pedal. And I personally can't do a rolling dismount on my MTB.

It was a shame Mr McNamee didn't get a look in for all the work he does with the kids and newcomers.
