Why does a Niner Air carbon/Santa Cruz High Ball etc cost SIX times as much?coz someone will pay 6x as much for one with a certain brand name. No-ones gonna pay £1800 for an on-one. They charge what they can get away with. OO produce cheaply and sell lots, other companies produce....well not quite as cheap, but put more shine and a bit of spin on it and charge a lot more, they only sell a few but make their profits - but you already knew that didn't you

Kind of my point North...
At the risk of being a h8er... you're going to have to expand on that a bit tbh, no idea what point you're trying to make.

It seemed to me the angleset thing is the latest new thing and used to breathe life into this model and no doubt others. Neither is best...though each version is best when on one are trying sell.
Just business...

When will this slackset be available ?
Posted 8 months ago # -
Early 1980s
Posted 8 months ago # -
Can someone explain the slackset thing? I am very confused, can't see anything about head angle options?
Posted 8 months ago # -
D0NK - I needed a spare crown race, so I emailed Jon and he posted me one out FOC the same day.

I suspect it's just a generic term for an angle changing headset.
This deal is very tempting indeed. I was so close to getting a Soul too, already have most of the bits. A pound lighter and a bit more grrr (and my dropper post will fit). Damn you on-one!
p.s. same deal on the whippet please
Posted 8 months ago # -
... was tempted. Untill seeing them built up that is ... I guessing they ride better than they look?
Sure looks a bland no frills sort.
Posted 8 months ago # -
That's just ridiculous!
Very tempted to sell my SS despite telling the guy I was selling it to I was no longer selling it, selling the steel 456, by the time I've sold the resultant spare finishing kit I'd be in profit!

Works Components make an angle changing headset (2deg) for £79.99.
We (on-one) are ordering some when I get my head out of my arse.

It does make you wonder...if they can do what is a fairly low volume production run and still be viable at £300.Why does a Niner Air carbon/Santa Cruz High Ball etc cost SIX times as much?

On one buy from the factory, and sell to you.
SC etc buy, sell to national distributor, sell to shop, sell to customer. And also sponsor Steve Peat.By not sponsoring Steve Peat, and selling direct, they can drastically cut retail prices to customers.

Is that why the alumninium fames are cheeper now? It's all the re-cycled Stella cans?
Posted 8 months ago # -
ah I see, I'm used to a 71 head angle anyway so this all sounds ludicrously slack to me already...!
I was thinking of buying a jump frame like a Giant STP, as a fun urban hackaround to mess around on in the evenings and on the way back from work. This carbon 456 looks like it would be capable of performing this task still, but be more versatile, would anyone disagree with this, or is it not really going to be as strong as a jump/urban bike, not that I am very gnarly.
p.s. I heard Stella is reconstituted from concentrate in a big tank in Swansea docks or somewhere, which kind of puts me off.

If that was the deal on a Whippet frame I`d have one like a shot, (as a second bike) but I cant see me getting rid of my bluepig to replace with the C456...
Brant, how do they compare geometry wise ? and are you going to be doing an On-one with "Ragley" geometry in the future?

I spilled coffee laughing when i read this.
Pity I've just ordered a new bike, carbon 456 looks very nice, may see if I can scrape up the pennies

But this isn't 2 versions
It's one frame, and a seperate product that can change it. On One are making an asset of it by linking up with Works and by testing the things but almost any bike can do it.

They are also refreshing tired (but still as good) product with something that makes it better, when it was previously the best.

Not really... This is nothing new after all, I bought my C456 specifically because the tapered headset gave it good flexibility for this sort of thing.
Posted 8 months ago # -
Does it matter that these are painted rather than Lacquered?
Posted 8 months ago # -
Anglesets existed before tapered steerers?

No idea tbh. But they existed before Carbon 456s.

Suggested size for a 5'11 guy with a 32in inseam for trail centres?
Posted 8 months ago # -
I'm 5'10 and 31 inch and very comfortable on a medium... Would probably be OK on a small, definately not on a large. I reckon you'll be much the same.
Posted 8 months ago # -
So how do angle sets give the 456 more versatility than other frames?

They don't. Obviously.
Posted 8 months ago # -
18" too small for 6'4" me for use as play bike around town and so on? 20" looks too big for that kinda thing...
Posted 8 months ago # -
But you implied that's why you chose it North?
Posted 8 months ago # -
hello bike people,
i have a carerra fury, i'm not sure anything could be better than my beautiful piece of halfords history, but i'm tempted by such carbon treats.
anybody know if any of the componants would be transferable?
i know seatpost wouldnt be cos its 31.8mm, guessing bottom bracket wouldnt? and as a result cranks.
i'm not good with this technical stuff
thank you xxkissesxx

BB ok I'd have thought, but front mech possibly not.
You'll need a new headset and to check fork steerer length too.
Posted 8 months ago # -
front mech doesnt exist anymore as i've upped my level of sexiness by going 1X9. headsets a good point! hmmmm think the frames will stick at this sort of price for the future? i'm meant to be investing in a transition covert when one appears for sale at the right price so this would dent my funds me thinks... but definite plan for the HT in ze future
cheers cynic-al, mucho appreciatedo

No, I didn't... I chose it not because it's any more versatile, but because it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something of the slackness of my Mmmbop but without the weight of a Pig or the horribleness of an Mmmbop's rear end. Obviously the Ragley Ti got a look in but the C456 came very close for half the price. There weren't many other contenders in the end (did consider a Soul with the Works 1 degree HA reducer in but the standard steerer limits things more)
