Its clearly a serious analytical piece of investigative journalism, looking at a culture and the way it embraces and celebrates the institution of marriage. And is in no way a cheap shot, and a chance for people to point and guffaw in horror at pikeys

I’m interested in watching this, as I know very little about gypsy culture, and would like to learn more. I just hope it’s not ‘let’s laugh at a minority group who have differing values to our own’ type divisive crap that serves only to polarise our already fragmented society even further…

I’ll be watching. I thought the last one was actually pretty good and made me appreciate that actually they have some very moral, upstanding and traditional values.

It was indeed a really interesting documentary. It’llbe intersting to see if the series keeps that up

And the ‘women in hot pants’ quota was higher than a vintage 70’s edition of Top of the Pops. Which isn’t necessarily what you’d expect from a program focusing exclusively on weddings

From my brief encounters with weddings and all they involve (which has only been in the last few weeks!!) I’d say that most ‘big’ weddings are a vile circus, be it gypsy or not? I’ve tried on much worse/gopping dresses in the last few weeks than some of the gypsy girls wear but they are white so its ok???!!! Was nice to see young couples willing to devote themselves at such a young age, they do seem more monogomous(sp?) than most young people. ….. stop being so judgey you miserable lot!

The women are, generally, very feminine looking, not the way they dress but bone structure an’ that. The blokes, more often than not, look like they’ve been smacked in the face with a spade.

According to the interview on Front Row (Radio 4), the original documentary was very well received by the Gypsy community as a whole and that’s why the programme makers were allowed greater access to film this follow up.

never saw the original documnentary but the young so in love couple who married for life split up about 6 months later…

I saw the advert and saw the bit about evictions, wonder if theyll go into the cigarette smuggling, the dangerous sofa importing or even the fact that some of them are actually tenants in council houses in wolverhampton… (on paper!), knowing people that live near to the largest unauthorised camp in the UK (billericay) its pretty much hell a lot of the time…

I remember the original documentary.

The enormous dresses the brides wear can weigh up to 30 stone – almost 200kg. Most brides end up with scarred hips from bearing the weight.

It was interesting – if not fantastic in the real sense of the word.

Funny, I distinctly remember the disregard and disrespect shown to white girls by Pakistani males growing up in Huddersfield along with the threats and abuse metered out to Asian girls if they were seen (or believed to have been with) white guys.

That’s a really important distinction, Romany gypsies are an ethic minority, and will be classed as such in the next census. I used to work on official, council run, permanent gypsy sites and through that job met a lot of lovely people. They do all think about marriage from a very early age, one girl who was about 10 had her eye on a bespoke wedding dressmaker already, and was encouraged by her parents in this, but that’s just different culture. The Romany’s I met were always horrified by the actions of so called “travellers” as described above.

Doesn’t mean it wasn’t “pointy and laughy”. But they liked it, so either it wasn’t pointy and laughy in a bad way, or the gypsy community are refreshingly happy about people laughing at them.

What a shame it is that some folk lack the intelligence to be able to discuss a subject in a sensible and respectful manner.
