Are you bigger than he is?
Comes down to this really.
You're not going to want to waste money on solicitors and given he is a lodger I doubt he has the money to either.

I think the legal advice has pretty much been summed up by the six million dollar man above. I'm wondering what bit of working for shelter advising in this capacity as his every day job gives any reason to doubt his words?
steve austin is right (from a criminal lawyer who did ok at landlord and tennant)
get an openly gay mate to come round and lodge as well, but let him share with the guy who owes you money! See how long he stays then!
Do what yoda suggests, or get this guy to move in to his room;

Tell him they'll need to top and tail in the same bed until you can sort out a bunk bed. Make sure you tell him that the new guy has already claimed the top bunk, and that he has incontinence problems.
Laws have changed a lot since I last had a lodger in the early 90's a similar situation a friend lodged at my house weeks kept going by without any forthcoming payment so I chucked him out, packed all his stuff away neatly in boxes and an old suitcase and I dropped them off at his workplace
Throw him out and change the locks his word against yours.
Throw him out on his ear tonight, change the locks & deny any knowledge of him ever being a lodger
Hang on, hang on, have a laugh first
You're a complete mug if you give him a penny
Where are you located?
superglue his eyes shut while he sleeps and when you kindly offer to take him to the hospital, drop him and his stuff off in a field by a motorway. Then move house and change your name , just in case...
Surely he now owes you the original amount minus the week's rent?
So just press the fact that he's the one in debt not you.
Collect all his goods up, and put in suitable storage, and charge him the amount he owes you to get it back.
Why hasn't he paid you rent? Can he pay you rent in the future?
