Pretty tough late 90s Madchester indie music question

Hmm, memories.........
Monday - The Ritz with Dave Gannon.
Tuesday - The Banshee for cheap Vodka night, or if trying to pull students 5th Ave, 42nd Street (Then known as The Playpen?), Berlin or DeVilles.
Wednesday - see Tuesday.
Thursday - Banshee, then Jilly's, get hand stamped then flit between them.
Friday - See Thursday. Also the Hacienda, or if got knocked back, Berlin, The Venue or (later)the Brickhouse. Possibly Band on The Wall for Reggae night - Red Stripe, DJ Lorraine, free weed and the delightful Horace on the door. The Conti for Nurses.
Saturday. The Banshee or Jilly's if with mates - The Hacienda if with a dressy up kind of girl, Band on the Wall, the Gallery or The Boardwalk if she was a scruff like you.
Sunday - That club at the top of the escalators at the Royal Northern
College of Music - anyone remember it's name? That's why I now have the body of a 60 year old.
As for the OP, my money's on Shack.

The Conti!
How the hell did that place get a fire safety certificate?
Nobody has so far mentioned the king of Manchester night spots... The Granby!
Posted 2 years ago # -
The Granby! (shudders).
Nasty, nasty little pub. Always used to be full of Neanderthal City Fans - lovely undercurrent of violence on a Saturday Night, but handy for the delightful Kebab 'Shop' over the road - which like Mr Ben's outfitters only ever appeared at the weekend.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I preferred thew Granby to the Conti any day! That kebab shop sold pink chilly sauce which always seemed to seep out and coat my clothes like napalm.
I still think it's Yargo.

I've been away and really, really have missed STW, the above thread is why.
Lol. at Harry and Brant.
Thanks for the memories chaps.

Anyone here remember the Konspiracy? Now there was a club.
Posted 2 years ago # -
everyone should listen to this :-).indie dance. Maybe this is the tune? The Album is awesome too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkDhJ_m9XXI
Could be Saint Eteinne too.
Posted 2 years ago # -
One of my school pals Justin Crawford was bass guitarist in the New Fads
Posted 2 years ago # -
Maybe the tune was James - Sound?
Or may have been 'The Beloved'- they were quite a ravey indie band of the time.
So many good memories... Joe Bloggs flares, Acid tops, Reni hats, Kickers, Hacienda, Boardwalk, Konspiracy, Ritzy, Raves, Floppy fringed hair cuts and of course all the bands doing it for themselves!

the above thread is why
Absolutely. These kind of threads = STW at its best.
Posted 2 years ago # -
And the Sun Rising too - chilled, hazy sunny music, Ahhhhhhhhh......
Posted 2 years ago # -
And the PSV....
Posted 2 years ago # -
Why has no-one suggested it might actually be "The Sound"? They were a little bit earlier than baggy but could be them.
Mr Woppit may well have The Sound's full back catalogue
I'm liking the suggestion of Paris Angels, great single Perfume.
Yargo, did someone say Yargo? I'm sure the vocals would've been mentioned, so distinctive. I'm gonna go and grab the vinyl, see what it sounds like!Posted 2 years ago # -
Yargo still sounds ok. Body beat!
The only single word beginning with S contenders from that era in my 12"ers are Shriekback (too early?), Soho (Hippychick, though its Piece of You, I've got) and Spitfire (too rocky).
I've actually got a Shed Seven single called Dolphin in there too. Blimey.Posted 2 years ago # -
The PSV - Misty In Roots gigs anyone?
Here and Now, always supported by John Cooper Clarke or Ted Chippington - Cheetham Hill Library gigs, with a very funny Lemn' Sissay making the introductions. No alcohol on sale, but acid and mushroom tea available at the refreshment stall.
Faith No More at the the International 1, two weeks after Suicidal Tendencies played the same venue - I'd only just got my hearing back - worth it though.
Subhumans at Hulme Labour club?
World of Twist at the Hac?Dis fred is make me feel old, as the kids would appear to say.

OK, let's turn up the obscure-ometer. How's about Ed Barton - I've got no chickens but I've got 5 wooden chairs.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Wow, I remember him from The Tube. I reckon I've got a video of that somewhere along with Foffo Spearjig...
"Felt Nowt!"
Posted 2 years ago # -
He collected bits of wood. He actually wrote a song for kylie too!
Posted 2 years ago # -
mi©k - I've got chicken rythms on CD somewhere, drop me a mail if you want a copy sending out (or could rip/zip/email)... Its a long time since I listened to it but if I remember it didnt live up to my expectations,,, the single version "Rising Star" (FACD298) was much better as well. Now I'm showing my age!! is it really 20 years ago..... [looks in mirror, yes it was 20 years, dear me...]
Next week can we have a "Rave" reminisce session so I can:
1. Setup my "ghetto blaster" in the garage
2. Order white gloves and whistles fom eBay
3. Purchase the iPhone "Strobe" app
4. Chomp a few "disco biscuits" and throw some shapes
5. Cover myself in vic's and tell the entire forum (who I have not met before) that I love them all.Posted 2 years ago # -
LOL @ Duckers............I was a big shareholder in tigerbalm!!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Tiger barms?
Posted 2 years ago # -
curve?
ride?
lush?not quite madchester technically IIRC but there or there abouts
Posted 2 years ago # -
Re the Ed Barton vid, didn't he have some sort of 'performance space'/secondhand shop in Afflecks a while back?
Must confess to not having heard of him in a musical context, though I do remember 'It's a fine day' by 'Jane' from the Peel show.
Just looked him up on Wiki - seems like a proper interesting character.Posted 2 years ago # -
That's right. He's still going too - check out this, I'm sure some of it is filmed in chorlton brook I think. I see him around Chorlton a bit. I suspect the new Hulme wasn't right for his wood collection
Posted 2 years ago # -
anyone remember this?
Posted 2 years ago # -
The song that launched a thousand bike races (well... four to be exact)
I used to think that Brix was well fit, but she dances like my mum.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I had a particularly nasty cold recently and bought myself some Vapo Rub to try to help me sleep.
Had a Proustian moment as I lay on my sickbed, transported to a squat rave in Peckham in 1990.

Ah man this is great, Paris Angels - Perfume is currently going roundy roundy on the office record player (as an aside one of the guys brought his teenage daughter who had never seen a record player - we all felt incredibly old !). In the box of vinyl fun we also have New FADS, James, Inspirals and my personal fave although not Manchester - The Real People. I still think Window Pane is brilliant
Now, if anyone has that on CD I'd love a copy as while i have the sleeve for the album its got a mahoosive scratch right across it, in fact, more of a gouge !
Posted 2 years ago # -
NZCol - you've just reminded me! I've got a compilation CD called Madchester. I should list the tracks on here - see if it jogs Mr Ralli's memory (if he's still interested
)

Ed Barton performed last Friday in Prestwich (not sure if the write up has been posted yet): http://www.theshangrila.co.uk/
Posted 2 years ago # -
I used to work behind the bar at the Hacienda at its peak. I've seen pretty much all these bands in there. While sampling the wares of the various dodgy door-men who actually ran the place
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah happy days indeed
Posted 2 years ago # -
T-Coy, Carino
Posted 2 years ago # -
The Ritz! That brings back some memories. You could always tell if you had natural rhythm in that place because if you didn't the sprung dance floor would swing up and **** you.
