So, I bought myself a Praxis works BB to replace the SRAM unit in my Stumpjumper.

Five minutes later I hear an intrusive creaking.

I removed the BB, the bearings, I greased liberally…

    Still, creaking whilst pedalling.

    Then MrsPJM interjected.

“Do you know that your cassette is creaking?”

    D’oh!

It wouldn’t be the first time a ‘creaky BB’ turned out to be a creaky cassette.
If you’ve got a Dura Ace cassette the spider can crack and creak.
    Don’t scoff….

    I had 5 stumpjumper 2 with bb30, 3 with pf30. Each had “issues”.

Praxxis on the pf30 creaked until I stopped using grease between BB shell and praxxis BB unit, and used carbon fibre grip paste. Liberally on the frame BB shell, on the nylon sleeve and BB case itself. still use grease where praxxis BB threads together.

I’ve blamed lots of pf30s (we have 4 bikes on pf30) for creaking, when it’s turned out to be a cassette, freehub or my favourite the worn Axel of an xx1 crank.

Conversly I blamed everything but the bb on my new road bike. Striped, greased and torqued the whole bike, no joy. Finally knocked out the cups, applied think grease and had silence for over 800 miles.

Had creaks coming from all over though, Katy road bike was the dropout faces. Hardtail was the sestpost.
