So, Proud owner of a mint 1980’s Ford. Its 100% original and never been played with, The radio is so 80’s (not even a cassette) Radio sounds rubbish as AM only.
Dont really want to change the original radio but wouldnt mind playing Iphone. Is there a way to wire-in a lead? Has anybody ever done it?
See similar age radios with lead for sale but want to keep original radio if possible.

expect so, but you’ll need to crack it open.
probably better off hiding another stereo somewhere tbh.

Saw that but radio is not FM. AM LW only so thats a no go.
Its a Escort Mk2 RS2000 by the way.

    Ah, bottoms.

If it’s an AM only radio, does that imply mono speakers? (I’d have thought so having once owned a 1985 Ford…)

You could fit a small amp with a phono lead? Could be hidden under the seat.

I’d go with a hidden amp with a lead to plug your iPhone in a new speakers in the original places all new wiring. Looks original, decent sounds

Like the idea of a hidden amp.
    Any ideas what one?

TBH, given the state of what you’re likely to have already and your desire to keep it original, I’d probably buy a JBL Flip and hoy it in the passenger footwell / a door pocket.

I’ve got a little Sony dab radio, a bunch of rechargeable batteries and a Minirig speaker that I put on the passenger seat of my van. Works perfectly.

JBL Flip looks great and would plug into cig lighter for power.
Anyone know how they sound? The car is not exactly quiet.

Would be perfect. Bluetooth to your phone, hookup to battery and stash it somewhere behind the dash. Wire to some door speakers or whatever

I use one in the shed and they’re great for what you’re paying.

As the RS got door speakers or just the central dash one ?

I wouldn’t want to be chopping the panels about they are worth a fortune. Pretty sure the Mk2 Escort ( not RS ) I had only had a dash top speaker.

Yes, only has single dash speaker so JBL looks like a good option.
Car is too mint to be cutting about door cards.

If i had a RS2000 i would accept the radio as it is, I used to suffer from rightearlobeitis when i had my Mk1 Mexico due to the window down as i listened intently to the tone of the Janspeed exhaust note as the revs increased especially in a built up area, narrow streets between the hours of 7pm and 7am
Regular instruction from the polis to pull over to the side of the road was another thing but they couldnt charge me with anything, maybe pc savage could accuse me of driving in too low a gear

For mere mortals who know Sweet Fanny Adams about “in car Bluetooth speakers” and stuff, and would be interested in such, here’s a pic of that jabra in car speaker thingy..
And it looks like an ideal solution…

    Here’s one solution:

    Vintage radio upgrade

I’ve used an Anker bluetooth speaker in my 1980’s shitbox. It’s square and rubber coated so doesn’t slide around – you could strap it somewhere around the gear stick on an Escort, or under the radio.

    Some good options here.
I will look into the JBL thing as I have a bit of experience with JBL and know they are good.
What cars that Munro..looks sporty? A guess the car thread may be fun. Im saying something Swedish.
The Escort is a little indulgent I admit. Its very low miles, one owner and too good to hack about for a radio upgrade.

When I borrow a car for biking trips (normally a 1 family car household) I take my JBL flip 2 so I can stream music. Charges easily off the cigarette lighter but also from a USB battery pack

That might be your easiest option? Not permanent in the slightest and very modern!

    PS – need more pics

I had a mightnight blue one; that replaced the orange Mk1 Mexico.

Would love a Mk1. Thats next on the list when funds allow. Had an RS1600 Mk1 back in the day, sold it for £1000 It was rotten as hell though. They now go for 45K+.
This one I have had for a while now. It doesnt get used as much as it should.
To be honest I set my self the goal of buying the best Mk2 RS I could find. Its only done 35k from new and has never been painted or welded. Trouble is I have a car which should increase in value but by using it I will probable reduce its value.! Might give it a spin later today. (Not literally I hope).
Im thinking the JBL is the way to go.
