i do but not for real money yet.
can you recommend any good poker sites to play for small amounts. like 1 and 2p blinds.

also any decent tips for a beginner would be useful.

yes i like to play, both casinos and online. I use pokerstars which i find very good, as for tips i have loads but the best ones are

dont play with money you cant afford to lose, if you play with that mindset you end up folding hands you should be raising with

also be patient and bet with good cards, you will be amazed at how many people get bored and bet with nothing, one tip for this is multi table, alot of people do 2-3 tables at a time, i would heavily suggest 2 tables.

last one be aggresive, to many people online just call the blinds and try to limp in, if your willing to call the blinds you should be willing to raise, this is nown as a bet or fold mentality and once you start using it, this will make you become a much better poker player as it will allow you to start reading what other people have in there hands.

also if your fairly new to gambling poker with money there are lots of good poker books out there that will give you tips you have never even thought of so well worth buying a couple
    Have fun pal

Its a game best played with mates and LOTS of beer I reckon. We play 5 odd times a year and eat loads of food…drink lots and loose(mostly) £20.00. Never really been interested in the on-line gambling side of things…probably cos id get taken to the cleaners.

also any decent tips for a beginner

Don’t bother unless you really don’t value your free time. Seriously though, you need to be incredibly patient to be successful. To get to be any good (and to win) you need to analyse every single action carefully, i.e. why did he do that? and then plan your response accordingly. It really is a game a psychological manipulation. Often the cards you hold can be largely irrelevant. Obviously keeping up this level of focus for (possibly) hours on end is extremely hard work, but if you don’t and instead start making decisions randomly or following a “feeling” it just becomes a game of chance.

The unfortunate paradox in poker is that at the lower levels no-one plays “properly” so you can’t learn to play against skilled opponents because no-one cares about the money. If you play higher levels you will see decent players in action but at the same time you’ll get torn apart and might lose a lot of money as a beginner.

I would read a decent poker book, read through blogs/forums and if you can get some mates who are also serious about it to get together and play for meaningful-ish money (i.e. £10 a tournament).

But there really is no point in the lowest levels of online poker. You can’t win any decent money and you won’t learn anything.

I play with mates on a semi regular basis. It more about the craic than the cards but I do enjoy the game.

what richi said up there is pretty spot on.

But think about why you want to play it. If its for the social side then go for it. If its to learn the game then buy a book and play some micro-stakes games online. If its to make money then you might want to think about whether you are prepared to put the time effort and money into for potentially no return

I use pokerstars which i find very good

I find that Pokerstars favours the ‘fish’ and 9 times out of 10 I’ll go out to a ‘bad beat’. It does have the best tournaments though, big prizes.
Full Tilt is now up and running again, I find it very good.
Coral is my favourite though, smaller games but much more chance to win.

The advice above is good, I treat it like a hobby and my bankroll is $20 a week, which is a reasonable cost for something that I enjoy doing. I cash roughly 50% of the time and one day I’ll win that Sunday million…

Cash games are a no-no in my book, even at 1p/2p blinds it’s easy to lose lots. I think it’s much better to play in a sit and go or a tournament, where you buy in to play, so you know what the most you can lose is. Give it a go and good luck.

    Don’t try Pokerstars!
Coral is more like ‘proper poker’ with people who have a bit more respect for smaller stakes.

    But this

The unfortunate paradox in poker is that at the lower levels no-one plays “properly” so you can’t learn to play against skilled opponents because no-one cares about the money. is very true.

if you are after really learning the game as said before you will struggle at the 1/2 cent table, i mean who cares if they lose 2 cents, but on the other hand you can play this to your advantage,
you wait for “premium hands” ie AK, AQ high pockets and raise as people will be betting with bad cards,
i have played in all different sort of stakes and i feel you can learn different tricks from different stakes aswell, granted i dont play with small stakes as its a waste of time moneywise, you can learn things from it.

also when you first start you have to pick a table as there will be lots within your prices, try and get a table that has a high “players per flop” and also a high “money per flop” just means there is more “lose” players willing to lose there money 😉

This ^ x10 – we play once every couple of months, 8 of us round a table have a right laugh, £5 in so its a really cheap night & come away with £40 if you win 🙂 tried it online once & its as dull as dishwater

I did well in a small-time way at online poker years back (multi-tabling on Pokerstars)
That equated to grinding out about £1500 over 6 months of tediously cautious play.
It paid for a few nice things but quickly became boring, even though I was ony playing on my time off between work shifts.

I still play occasionally but often find it too boring, become reckless and inevitably lose money.

A good mate packed his job in for 2 years to play, 5 computers on the go , software telling him when useless players were on line throwing money away and when there was a seat available at the table. He would get up at 8 start at 8-30 and play for the full dayshift as if it was a real job, he wouldnt go on anything he was patient beyond belief, no good for me !!!. Hes back in the real world now, employed!!never knew how much money he was ever going to have in any month, he did have one cracking day had 4 Aces and got beat by a Royal flush gutted for 20 seconds til a box came on the screen with a $70000 prize for a bad beat or something like that.Think most of that probably went during the 2 years.

I’m gonna disagree with a few on here about how much to bet – for me, to be worth bothering with and to be exciting to play, you should be playing for enough that it hurts to lose. Not lost-the-house hurt but maybe not-going-out-for-dinner-for-the-rest-of-the-month hurt.

Whether that approach works for you might depend on how disciplined you can be and how “addictive personality” you are – the danger is that you chase your losses and get into real trouble, real quick.

I’m not a big fan of online poker, as I like the gamesmanship of eyeballing other players across a table, trying not give something away while trying to read them. Best one I’ve heard was a mate-of-a-mate who sat at a casino table playing while casually reading a book. The book? “The Book of Bluffs: How to Bluff and Win at Poker”.
