Was out walking the dog, when some olde fashioned plane flew over really low, then proceeded to zigzag about for a bit, before flying off.

Only have a old iPhone 4 with sellotape on the lens, so pic, and vid, quality are crap….plus I got confused when it flew behind a tree 8)

Any ideas what it was? For the record, I was near-ish to RAF Wittering.

Depends where he is, I guess. It did have stripes on the wing tips, rather than the RAF circle. Wish I had a decent camera now.

Edit: Seems his plane has single propeller, this was a twin.

    Seems to be.

That third photo is a tree not a plane.

Beautiful, God’s Own Aeroplane! It’s a Douglas DC-3 Skytrain, or Dakota in civvy guise. Affectionately known as the Gooney Bird. Capable of carrying far more than it was ever supposed to carry, and surviving massive amounts of damage and still flying.
Had a chance to fly on one once, it’s slightly disturbing to watch the wingtips waving up and down slightly when flying…

That’s the one. Was amusingly low when banking.

It had a camo paint job.

It’s soon to be the Battle of Britain memorial dinner, so they’ll be doing sighting fly-bys of the Lincolnshire airfields in preparation for that.

Some things just look right; the DC3 is one of those things.

“It’s a Douglas DC-3 Skytrain, or Dakota in civvy guise.”

    No its a RAF Dakota.
If it was USAAF or a civvy it would be a DC3 – Skytrain (No Froome content)

Like the RAF flies Hercules and the USAF flies C130’s (or what ever the current model number is.)

Speshpaul – you are partially correct.

The Douglas DC3 was the civilian aircraft, from which the USAF developed the C47 ‘Skytrain’. The RAF then bought the C47 and named it the ‘Dakota’ (Douglas Aircraft KOmpany [sic] Transport Aircraft).

    And we do fly C130s.

So when you say partially you mean completely as supported by you comments.

Its a Dakota, it was built as DC3 but once in the RAF in became a Dakota.
