    Whakatane, NZ.

    “Wha” being pronounced “Fu”.

As it happens there are quite a few “Whaka” towns in NZ.

    Hence the following advert:

It’s a bit out of keeping in this thread but I think Cape Disappointment is one of the best place names ever. It’s not Tribulating, it’s not Hopeful, it’s just… sigh. Cape of Mech

    Useless Bay is good too.

I always liked climbing up Fan-y-Big in the Brecons

Remember being 320 miles into a 400 mile bike ride round the whole of East Anglia and being a bit tender below, it was appropriate to stop at Rings End…

I saw an advert in a cycling mag for cycling holidays to “Peniscola”… Yep, Penis… Cola…

Now, I’m guessing it’s probably not pronounced “Penis Cola”, but nobody’s going to go on a training camp there!

“Hey man, I did a week of base work with the team in Pollensa then 4 days in Tenerife doing hill reps up Mt Teide. What about you?”

“Penis cola. I went to Penis Cola.”

Because despite living a few miles away for many years, I never knew the pronunciation (hint: there’s only two syllables in the correct name).
And they say it’s Welsh that’s difficult to pronounce. 😆

I was just looking at a potential ride route today, passing through Thickwood and Blue Vein. It also goes through Box which, in the context of this forum thread and the combination of the aforementioned place names, is highly amusing.

If you’d extended the ride to include Yatton Keynell, you’d have found Tiddlywink.
Box happens to be where Real World recording studios are, and Womad’s headquarters, Peter Gabriel living just along the valley.
Slaughterford is close to Thickwood, although the name means ‘the ford where the sloe trees grow’.
An area I know very well indeed.

There’s a Crescent near where I live, but it’s not a Crescent, it’s a Close. It’s full of old peoples’ flats and it’s named after the church across the road. St. Peter’s Church. When they built it someone obviously decided that a street full of old people being called “St. Peter’s Close” wasn’t on, so they called it a Crescent instead.
