Is it the bolt, or what the bolt screws into?

Bolt is cheap to replace. Bit it screws into -maybe not so cheap! Some forks come with replaceable steel inserts there as the magnesium casting is fragile: threads strip under less bolt torque/tension, and it allagedly cracks easier than aluminium or steel.

It happens when the bolts are over-tightened (they only need a wee nip up). Depends on the fork and your luck really when it comes to riding on them now.

36s or older Marzocchis by any chance?
