Well quite... It's more that I may not be able to afford a full sus replacement actually so may have to go for a hardtail...

Well that's the thing - I'm not convinced but I reckon that if I have my own one I've got more chance to tweak it to how I like bikes to ride or at least to see if it's possible.
Having seen Gus hammered silly at Afan this weekend on his Ti 29er, I'm less convinced about how much 'comfort' the bigger wheels really give though clearly his running a rigid fork on Saturday didn't help at all and he looked better on Sunday with the suspension fork fitted.

Horses for courses - HT does for HT business, FS for FS. You need less suspension, but none at somewhere like Afan is going to be a bit masochistic on any bike.

Funny thing was though that he seemed worse affected by it than the guy on the old 26" stiff as hell cannondale also with rigid forks...

its an odd one really as i used to have a rig with rebas on and it almost felt like i was on a short travel 26er but with bigger forks. i always found it a bit out of balance so i switched to rigid fork and it was much better.
i have a karate monkey now and thats even better

Neil has ridden rigid round bristol a fair bit though clubber, which teaches you to stay loose
Plus he dosn't have exisiting injury to aggravate.My 2p is, from the way you were talking at the weekend, you'd not be happy on a HT of any flavour somewhere like afan. Is there any rush? Can you not hold on until something suitable and in budget appears?
That said, prehaps 29er is an experiment you need to do, and I'm sure you'd get your money back on all the kit if it proved not to be for you.

Interesting...
Still very much in two minds - I think ideally, I'd rather stick with 26" XC full susser so that's probably my first direction and I'll be seeing how much it'll cost for a replacement swingarm for the Rocky. If that's not economical though, it'll probably have to be a hardtail in which case in theory at least, a 29er should at least mitigate the lack of suspension. Maybe.

bear in mind Clubber, that with the suspension on, I was chasing you down on all but the most twisty bits. That should be your biggest consideration, is it nimble enough

thing is I was noticeably slower all weekend on my hardtail than I am on the full susser so that would suggest that while the 29er was no slower, it wasn't any faster either.

I think that's a given - on tracks like W2 full suspension is going to be quicker than hardtail, especially if you decide not to use your perfectly good rebas!
