Is flickr the best place to have photos on line to share/download etc?

There are a couple of places you can share your work, Flickr, Instagram, 500px even Facebook. It depends on why you want to share.

I personally use and like Flickr mostly because it was the first site I came across and started to use but now I carry on with it because it is to photography as LinkedIn is to social media. Instagram is more like Twitter or Facebook; it’s a little less about the images and little more about the social status of those posting.

Flickr is a good community and has plenty of opportunities to connect, get input and advice, develop your ideas and explore other photographer’s work.

Regarding copyright, I think that anything you produce is automatically your copyright. You’re real question is how do you enforce it. It depends on what kind of images you’re making as to how concerned you should be about that. I never even give it a second thought personally. May I suggest that unless you’re producing stuff that’s seriously good, it’s not something you need to worry about?

This site might help you review which sharing site is best for you:

    Thanks Gee,
I did see and look at the link.
Ref copyright etc, not to fussed just like to have some recognition for the photos I take.
From what I seen it is a minefield and hard to enforce etc.

When I’ve had something in national news, every paper/site/TV station has contacted me and explicitly asked for permission to publish, can make for a hectic day or two when it happens.

Flickr lets you determine publishing rights, from the usual copyright to Creative Commons options.

Thanks again for the info everyone, I think I be on flickr v soon.
Just supported a cycling charity event and got some pics of the riders, so happy for them to have photos to remember the pain and suffering fun times they had, and if any get used for promo just like to have “taken by” type thing.

This one helps sum up the event, they just riding a big hill up onto Exmoor and they still smiling etc.

One of the things I have never been capable of – drawing or painting. Always impressed at those who can.

    Thanks.

Everybody should have a go drawing…and remember above all nothing is bad.

Perhaps the art thread ought to be started again.

Instagram is such a mystery to me. I know it’s popular in the US and especially so with the younger/hipster/lomo crowd. Can anyone enlighten me more? Can you post things that are anything other than 1×1 ratio now?

I tend to export from Lr to Flickr – then I can send it to Instaface if I want to – thus bypassing the 1*1 ratio.

    Not quite true.
It’s not too hard I use websta.me to get to the source image location:

Re. Instagram, yes, you can post other ratios now. To hotlink an image to here, I used the Instagram webpage or Instaliga – neither allow it now. Currently using Websta but I guess that will go the same way, but while it’s still working, here’s a pic. User @bob_summers if you’re somehow interested in my family snaps and the odd pushbike!

This is the best I could do today for a 7 nature photos in 7 days challenge on FB – slightly OOF unfortunately – will see if the sun comes out and I can get a squirrel in focus later. Shot from around 30ft away

Sean wanted a Depeche Mode/U2/Anton Corbijn feel for his shoot. Great to have to plan something out a little better than usual!

It’s interesting isnt’t it, that Andy’s work is considerably better than the material in that link above!

Sure it does but I was basing my comment on the fact that the linked work looks a lot like Andy’s.

Have to say I prefer Andy’s too. Much more feeling. The linked ones all felt a bit too processed and in your face. None of the subtlety of Andy’s work.
