Looking for any hints and tips about putting on an exhibition or dealing with galleries.

Also some more specific advice if possible – I have an acquaintance who is looking to put up a photo exhibition. They have been offered a space to rent in a gallery. Its hard to tell if it will be worth the risk given the rental costs, framing etc versus possible sales of the photos.
On top of the rental charge they have now been told the gallery expects my acquaintance to cover all the costs of public liability insurance for the gallery during the rental period. Is this normal?

Anyway, if anyone has any useful comments, hints or experiences in putting on an exhibition I would be really pleased to read them. Thanks.
