For my nephew, budget around £50.
He can be a little fickle and his current interest is photography so I wondered if there was something expensive, but classic, that would otherwise be cheap. Sort of a practical gift but also a keepsake.

Depends on what sort of photography he does, and what sort of camera does he have?

You could get a reasonable tripod for £50 or so. Get a decent brand and it will last a few years – its not going to go obsolete anyway. eg look at a Manfrotto Compact, or maybe a Gorillapod SLR Zoom.

Or maybe a set of filters? Though you would want to check if they are compatible with his camera. And they are more specific to particular types of photography.

Or if he carries the camera anywhere, a Peak Design Capture Clip can be very useful.

OP, do you know what type of photography is he into? Landscape, portraits, street, nature, abstract etc?

Film camera? My niece was 22 last month, I got her an OM-1 (well, it was my old one sitting unused on my shelf) and she’s well pleased with it. I got a strap for it from Couch, made from the upholstery of an 80s VW jetta.

Get him a days course, experiences are always better than ‘things’ for pressure IME.

Not sure what subject or type of photography he is in to. Quite possibly none at all by the time he is 22!

If he has a smart phone and an slr. Get them a ‘trigger trap’ remote cable release. Ace bit of kit, cheap and leads to experimentation

I’d go for a photography “experience”: that way he’ll have some good memories, some photographs, and an idea if its something he wants to stick with.

A Fuji Instax; honestly they are genuinely so much fun. I use my son’s almost as much as he does. The results are fantastic; great colour, cute size, accessible.

It’s a bit more than £50 though.

Speaking personally and as a photographer I love looking at good quality photography books.

‘Road To Seeing’ by Dan Winters is just about on the money.

Someone else mentioned Gorillapod slr zoom (make sure you get the one with the bracket) – that’s a great product.

A remote trigger for DSLR is also really handy.

Microfibre lens cloths are great too.

If you really want to push to boat out, a 50mm prime lens is something every photographer should own. You’ll need to find out what camera he has and whether he already owns that lens, but a 50mm f1.8 should cost under £100

Get him a peak design camera clip for his camera, clips to your rucksack or belt.

I’ve recently got one for my Sony action cam and it’ll be useful for my Lumix TZ60 as well so i can clip it to my hydration pack – saves fumbling about and the hassle of removing from a bag/case etc.

I’ll second the idea of buying a decent bag. It’s so good to have a dedicated, proper bag to carry all your kit around and keep it safe. We have some of these at work for our new stock, and they look very nice. I’d certainly buy one.
