Has anyone got one? I’ve Googled and it appears pretty easy but wondered how easy it is in the real world. We are thinking of getting a new dog, which will come micro-chipped. We only want to travel within the EU.

Anyone have firsthand experience of this?

    Thank you.

Speak to your local vet, they do the tests etc. Not that complicated.

Careful of EU countries own particular laws, friends got there staffie a pet passort, only to find france won’t allow staffies in (well maybe more: Staffordshire terrier without a pedigree.).. passport or not

Its a lot easier now than it was with the blood tests and waiting time.
Our dog is on its 3rd passport because of errors made by vets in Spain,UK and France.Check, check and recheck that the completed passport complies entirely with the Defra regs down to the finest detail. Its not very funny driving all the way from Southern Spain to Calais to be told that the Spanish vet was one digit out with the microchip number and the passport had to be returned to Spain for correction. That was just one of many !

    Pretty easy to sort now.

Microchip dog, vaccinate against Rabies, have passport issued, wait 21 days then you are free to travel within the EU.

Can only travel on approved routes. Most people seem to go via tunnel as quick and easy. When abroad in the 24-120 hours (1-5 days) before re-entry to UK you have to have them treated against tapeworm and passport updated accordingly.

Ask your vet for advice on tick prevention when abroad and sand flies if going very South.

Do double check everything though. Esp microchip number and dates ( now have to be written 03/05/2015 rather than 03/05/15 etc)

    Thank you for the replies.

As suggested I’ll give the vet a ring on Tues.

    Any idea of cost?

Our cats were going to be £130 each but we had all 3 done together and did a deal with the vet.

IIRC the rabies jab, health check and passport issue was around £100. The worming and health check in France/Spain is about 40 Euro – slightly more in Calais and most vets are up to speed with the procedure. If you are travelling frequently, try and buy the wormer on-line and supply it to the vet – most of them don’t mind and it does save a bit 🙂
