as i dont always go riding with my mates i thought it might be an idea to look into one of these. We use them in the Offshore industry so i thought it might be a good idea to get one for biking as i do a lot of exploring when out and so cant always tell the Mrs exactly where i’ll be. Anyone have any input as to a good one and or where to buy it? most of the ones i seem to have come up with on my google search are in the US or happen to be a bit fugly. not that i’m into image of course 😉 cheers

by the way i dont mean a garmin style GPS, i’m talking about one that if i fall and bugger something the fire engine, police, ambulance and coastgaurd can pick up the signal and come to my rescue at the touch of a button………….unless a garmin can do that? 😕

I think a “spot” is the is the type of thing you are looking for. Not cheap.

Why would the one you use offshore not work for biking?

Is this the sort of thing you’re looking for?

I bought the collar version for the dog who likes to run off if frightened, can be tracked via OS maps on a smart phone & has a panic button on it that can be pressed in an emergency that will alert any phone programmed to the device. I’ve had great service from Retrieva & ViewRanger who supply the mapping.

Another one to add to the list is this one by Mobile Action…

…although, like the others, not cheap. Have been impressed by their i-gotU GT-600 GPS Logger that I’ve been using for the last year now.

What I’d like is a pay as you go sat phone to bang a few quid of credit on every now and then when I’m heading out on a remote epic.

as for the one we use offshore, you have to sign them in and out when you get issued them. I think they’re around £400 a pop and EX rated
