Never been to the area but it’s kind of on the way back from the Lakes to Barnsley and we’ll be in a camper.
Where’s good for a one-nighter in this area? Bikes will not be involved…cheers

Appletreewick, two good pubs and a campsite.
The New Inn used to be a Mecca for MTB when John pitchers had it.

Yes, there are some great rides. Think singletrack did the best one as one of the classic rides.

    Look for that one first.

It’s not really on the way back to Barnsley is it ??

Nice enough place but not worth going out of your way IMO.

If you are however travelling back through the Aire Valley there is some great riding around Bingley/Baildon… unfortunately you tend to need local knowledge though apart from the legit Bingley Bash

Except Rosedale is nowhere near Pateley.

Nice enough place but not worth going out of your way IMO.

    Matter of opinion &

    If you read the OP.

Ah – in that case, definitely not worth it.

The pub in Middlesmoor is nice on s freezing cold winters night when no other bugger is about

7 miles out of pately there’s a nice little site called studfold farm. Nice walks and nice local pubs. Easy access to howstean gorge and scar house dam is worth a visit.

    I wouldn’t for non-biking, TBH.

Central or southern Dales has more options in terms of eating and drinking.

Was starting to think I must have imagined typing ‘bikes will not be involved’ 😉

How stean gorge is a good laugh, do abseiling, via Ferrara, caving , that kind of thing. You can camp / van there also. Pately bridge is nice and has a good pie shop.
You can make a good day of it

Its a good place for a visit. The italian restaurant on the outskirts of the village is very good and Brimham rocks is just around the corner and worth a look.

There’s also Stif Cycles down the road if you want to drool over Santa Cruz’s.

And don’t forget the oldest sweet shop in the UK.

is it too obvious to suggest harrogate?

I was going to suggest that also. If you’re taking that route back from the Lakes then how about stopping at Grassington, Patelely and then onto Harrogate?

Well Pateley has great walks, some good viewpoints, things to look at, one awesome butcher, and another pretty good one.

Coldstones cut worth a gawp, Two stoops/guise cliff also good for wandering, Brimham rocks as mentioned.

Nidderdale is officially an area of outstanding natural beauty so to say it’s not worth a visit seems a bit odd.

Grassington, Pateley, Harrogate, Appletreewick etc are all worth a look.

Depends what the alternatives are on a route between the Lakes and Barnsley. I think there are a lot prettier bits of the Dales, Pateley itself is OK, couple of nice shops and pubs, but nowt special. Nidderdale to the north is pretty enough, How Stean Gorge is OK if you’re in the area, never been massively impressed with Middlesmoor – one pub and a church on top of a hill basically.

Brimham is great, but can get a bit rammed.

Here’s another alternative AONB – North Pennines – you’ve got Alston for lunch, a great scenic drive over into Teesdale, High and Low Force from Bowlees is a great short walk, some really lovely pubs and eateries on the way down through Barnard Castle on the way to the A1.
