Panniers - advice needed - or maybe I should just take a donkey with me?

Aye up - I'm going to be riding from Fort Bill to Aberdeen beach in April and thinking about carrying stuff. Rucksack is fine for most trips over a couple of days, but thinking I might be better with a pannier for this trip.

I ride a SC Heckler and I'm looking at a post mounted rack but really not sure what to use bearing in mind there's a fair bit of travel on the bike.

I've looked at Topeak MTX beams and bag combos but I've only got about £50 tops to spend - I've got a budget for this wee holiday and it's not a lot

So what advice can you give me?(relating to this subject) I'm definitely not taking a donkey - they smell too much

On road or offroad? If offroad, I would definitely stick with the rucksack and maybe a frame bag

iirc the toppeak beam racks are restricted to about 10 kgs and god knows what riding offroad will do to them. If you have more cash (and your frame is compatible) you could look at Oldmanmountain, they have racks designed specifically for some FS frames, but 50 quid won't get you an OMM rack I don't think.

Offroad for me! I had wandered about a frame bag or something like carradice but they're pretty expensive too

Will check out OMM though - Could always ebay a few things ot get the extra cash

For £50 I doubt you'll get anything decent new - try SH, but as above am not sure how well it'll work.

At the amount of money you want to spend I don't think you will get a decent pannier set up ( which I would always prefer)for a full sus.

I'd go with a seat tube rack , rucsac and tie stuff all over the bike approach.

So - basic seatpost rack a couple of KG on there, tent poles on the bike frame, toolkit in bottle cages and even bungee stuff onto the handlebars. Light but bulky stuff in the rucsac

Carradice Camper Longflap saddle bag.
Holds 24l. You can get a SQR system or just use toe-straps and a bungee.

Job done.

For a very robust seatpost rack try Cycle Promotions in Barnsley,01226 294991 they have an aluminium rack with a better clamp than Topeak with similar weight and adjustability for £13.99 got one on my Blur and it clears the rear wheel on max compression. They also have Altura rack packs with little fold out panniers for £35 so all in under your budget.Make sure you're using a sturdy aluminium seat post, carbon will just break.
