Within the last year or so I’ve noticed that I am getting pain when lying on my left side in bed .

It’s not excruciating by any means but does wake me to prompt a return to the right hip for sleeping.

No pain walking and range of movement is normal. ??

42 yo otherwise fit and well.

Could be Iliotibial Band (ITB) problem.

Could be tight hamstrings. Lots of lower back problems can be traced to this.

Could be an actual hip issue. That’s one of the symptoms I had leading to a trip to the Doc’s who referred me to Consultant who said I needed new hips …which ended my running and started my mountain biking!

Still not had the op done though after 2 years !

Erm… do you shift your weight onto your left side on the loo seat when performing, er, hygiene operations? I do and my left hip gets sore sometimes.

For years I thought my left hip was wearing out – constant dull nagging pain around the joint (it felt like). Turns out it was all the muscles around there were tight- my ass muscle(?) was described as quite powerful/over-built by the chiropracter who did a few things (no not those things) and sorted it out…not one eek since.

Chop your leg off, that’ll sort it.

Seriously sacro-iliac joint pain can mimic hip pain. Stretch gluteals and see if if helps. If not get checked out

Have you fallen/crashed on that side? I had a similar issue & was diagnosed with bursitis. A cortisone injection sorted it for a while but it’s creeping back again. I’d had it for about 10 years before I mentioned it to the doc – never gave me enough trouble to seem worth a visit on its own.

I get hip pain, but then mine is full of meccano 😉 If I was you I’d make a nonurgent trip to your GP, it’s probably nothing, or it could be the start of any number of other hassles that you’d rather know about sooner than later.

Same problem I had but on both hips. Do you also suffer from restless legs, there was a thread on this a few days ago. Multivits with iron made my hip problems go away within a couple of days.

Agree with Northwind… I manned it up for a couple of years before finally giving in and seeing a Doc….Wish I’d gone sooner now..may have save a little bit of gristle in the joint if I had 😥

Hip oa is usually characterised by pain on weight bearing into the groin or front of the thigh, particularly when raising the knee up. Also restricted movement in the same direction. It’s worth seeing a professional for an assessment.

Do you recall any impact / stress that would have caused the pain or has it gradually developed over time?

Either way i would go see a doc & specialist. Better to know what the prob is for sure so you can get it fixed or worst case, change your sports to suit (drastic i know!)

In the meantime consider a daily stretching routine…

I survived the hip jigging below but still have occasional pain & accept it will never be perfect!

39 here and I get the same thing if I sit in a seat too long in the same position, or lie on a hardish bed.

Mrs FD is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and says its because some muscles in my legs are too tight. She did give me the proper names but I dont recall.

That just me though so donesnt mean its the same for you…

Cheers everyone… Yeah my only reassurance is that it doesn’t actually show itself other than when I’m in bed and on that side.

Major trauma / falls … Jeez now I’ve had a lifetime of them but nothing specific to the left limb.

I’m hoping its just a muscular issue… I will make some enquiries at the hosp.

Flexibility is the base to start from for most muscular strains. It’s a basic, but most overlooked, component of fitness.

I recently started getting a bad pain in my left hip, and also a ‘dead leg’ type feeling in my quads. I couldn’t sit down for more than a coule of minutes or lean forward. I was seeing a physio about a bad back (bloody washing machines) at the time, and mentioned it to her. See did a bit of investigating, and suspects a labral tear. She wrote a letter to my GP, who immediately requested an X-ray. This showed up nothing (as he expected) and has now referred me on to an orthopedic consultant. I seem to be lucky that its moving along so quickly. It looks like an MRI scan is the next thing. Haven’t been on the bike months now though.

I do occasionally.. but like Northwind mine is full of surgical steel

Perhaps you smashed the ball joint off your femur and had to have it reconstructed in the operating theatre and it’s just slipped your mind…?

    I started getting hip pain a while ago, went to the docs, it happened after a bad flu like virus session. Diagnosed as reactive arthritis;
