I’ve loved the XJS since I was a kid and at 44 am considering making my dream come true.

    I could pick up a good 1997 4.0l auto for around £6k.

Does anyone have any real life experience of owning, running, maintaining an XJS?

    Ta.

It ain’t gonna be any type of cheap. Lots of fuel, lots of repairs.
But yeah, I’d love one too. V12 though 🙂

I had an XJ6 a few years back, having started out after an XJS. They’re based on the same chassis.

From my research at the time, the XJS was built down to a price and is filled with gremlins. The Jag. specialist who advised me was adamant that you got a lot more XJ6 for your money. I think the electrics proved particularly problematic on the XJS.

The XJ6 was a great car, fast and comfortable, and it really turned heads. I was able to get a well serviced “old man’s car” for about £1,600 and it was pretty sound. Got rid after a couple of years when the sun roof started leaking (sorry to the chap that took it).

If I was doing it again, I’d go for the Daimler 🙂

I think a mate of mine bought an XJS (pre-owned by Jack Bruce he reckons). Drove it up from Surrey to N Scotland, would have been cheaper to join the AA (!)

I’ve never actually seen him out in it…

XKR is the way to go.
An Awesome amount of car for not a huge amount of money.
Or if you want a Jag with abit of ooomph an S type R with over 400bhp should be within reach.
My mate works at a Jag dealership and they are built waay better than they used to be. As said , not a huge diference between a DB7 and XK Jag.

I hope you have deep pockets! I had a V12 XJS many years ago and it almost bled me dry. (£100 for a distributor cap anyone 😕 ) When it was running (on all cylinders) it was fantastic, but those moments were few and far between. I know that the later engines, 3.6 & 4.0 straight 6’s were a much better prospect. Not learning from experience, I have been looking at an XF recently. The Jag bug is difficult to shake off. 🙂

I had a v12 one a few years back, cranberry red and cream leather. When it ran well it was OK but still not as quick as you’d imagine. Nice car for medium paced journeys but mine eventually set itself on fire coming back from Norfolk one Sunday and I watched it until it stopped then drove it home the last hour with not much working electrical wise and left it at the scrappers. Never ever will I sink my own cash into an old jag again !

    You seen this?

This is the bit that put the fear of god into me.

(along with the rust, the highly dubious electrics and the bankruptcy potential of the fuel bill)

I’ve had a thing for an X100 XKR for a while. Got a test drive in one this summer. 4.2l supercharged V8, 400bhp, 400+lb/ft of torque. And it was deeply, deeply dull to drive. Mostly down to a leaden autobox (even in sport) but also very little in the way of feedback. Cruising great, but it in no way was sporty. Didn’t even feel especially quick. (and that’s compared to a lightly tweaked BMW 320D estate!)
