I’ll soon be heading up to work in Orkney for a month or two, can only take one bike with me, is there anything resembling decent MTB riding or should I take the road bike instead?

Road la. Think you could do something with the MTB on Hoy, but overall it’s more suited to road.

Was there for a week this summer with the roadbike, and spoke to a few locals about the MTB possibilites. Some but limited.

A ‘cross bike might be worthwhile of you have one as some of the coastal paths would be awesome.

route on Hoy to Old Man of Hoy (for the view), but thats about all. (ferry to Moanness and go back via Lyness (Scapa Flow centre)

lovely tranquil place, goto the Ring of Brogar early one sunny morning, eat a red pudden supper (*honest, chippie in Kirkwall), well worth a visit

Trials bike! Some great stuff to hop around. Some trails along the coast on the mainland, wind is the main thing though, one day it stopped and everyone fell over…
