    I’m just about to make a fairly large purchase from an online shop in France. I know all banks differ but generally is it better value to purchase with a debit card or through Paypal?

    Credit card every time.

    Credit Card. I have had some trouble with my UK bank blocking these “foreign website purchases” from time to time so be prepared for a call.

    If you can send money directly to their bank you could use Transferwise. No bank charges, excellent rates and only a small fee which is waived if you use this link for your first transfer:

    I used them a lot when I lived in France and it’s very easy.

    Thanks all, I decided to go with Bitasuite’s suggestion of using Transferwise and saved about £40.
