Depends on the company, I work for a reputable retailer who are currently employing sales managers but the definition of the role will vary from company to company.

I’m a Senior Account Director, working under my Sales Manager. I head a team of 4 and my colleague (job title the same as mine) does the same. The Sales Manager oversees us two and we report to him only. He’s the go to guy really.

Generally it’s the person who manages the sales team. Compiling sales forecasts, be responsible for hitting targets and making the company money.

In my last place he was the guy that took all the credit when things were going well then blamed everyone else when it wasn’t.
