Do they work without any chainguide?

Depends on your riding and your bike. They are as good as any.

Not too far off the benefits of Saga myself.They work as well as other n/w rings,chain line and chain length need to be set up well,clutch mech helps keep quiet, but not essential. I have a guide on my big bike though,chucked chain off that a couple of times but only when in highest gear on fast rocky decents
