just setting up the chain
it either too tight so I wont be able to remove the wheel etc or too loose as in the chain tug runs out of threads before the chain is tensioned
I'm running a 32t and 16t
is it common place to have to buy a half link or am I doing something wrong

Sounds odd - I have the same setup and it went on fine. It could be a tight spot on the chainring perhaps - happens as it never goes on truly centred. On a geared bike you don't notuice as the tension takes it out.
Loosen the chainring bolts slightly, rotate the cranks (with chain attached to rear sprocket) and tap the chainring gently with a rubber mallet. When the tight spots have gone - it's centred.

just fit it and ride. you'll be surprised by how much the chain 'grows' in your first ride.
Go for the "too tight" option: to get the wheel out just nudge the chain off the chainring so it becomes slack, then hook the chain off the rear sprocket and outwards over the dropout. Now the chain is outta the way and the wheel comes out.
had another go last night after writing this,the too tight is about half the pin whole from actually getting it together and as said the other option is just slightly too long as the brake caliper is at full extention yet still slightly not all the way onto the disc,and the chain tug bolts are about 5mm too short. might try another chain,this one is one of the cheap singlespeed ones from on-one
you could try a half link?
Get a proper bike
I'm selling a 18" GT Peace singlespeed bike/frame - it's steel and has an eccentric BB which is much neater and SOOOOOO much less faff.
(Does this count as a hijacking?)
get a complete half link chain.
take the nuts off the chain tug.
differnt chain wont help.
what chaintug is it?
the dropouts are long enough to change 2/3 teeth on the sprocket, with a good chaintug that gives the full length of the dropout.
got the rings,chain and chaintug from one-one
already tried removing the nuts but still no dice
just bought a half link on the way home from work,I'll fit it later and remove it when the chain stretches
I've a scandal that fits best with a half link
