Well is it? My GP said I could carry on providing I was aware of it and didn't push myself too hard. However the geared bike (my coiler aka das strudlepanzer) is in the LBS having it's main pivot bushing replaced so I rode my inbred last weekend which may have been less than intelligent.

I still ache a little in the region of said hernia from the ride. I think on the coiler I would have just chuked it int a low gear at every climb thus reducing the straining which may be enlarging/damaging the hernia further. Any medical type people in the house?

Not being a medic, I'd say be aware of it and don't push yourself too hard = don't go straining away uphill on a SS.

Not even 100% sure what a hernia is in fact. I don't know why I'm replying at all.

hernia = split in muscle wall surrounding intestines or stomach. Can, as in my current case, result in some of intestine protruding through when stood up creating a small non-painful lump below the skin. Apparently mine is stable as when I lie down the lump retreats and all feels normal.

Aged a mere 29 this is my second hernia – I had the first aged 13 playing rugby so this one has always been on the cards at some stage.

My GP said the same thing to me (yeah, carry on riding and running) when I went about mine. But I'm going to go back and ask to get it stitched up. It hasn't strangulated and isn't sore, but I am regularly worrying about when it might go all balls out. With my luck it'd be while up some distant munro two hours from a phone signal.

i had one once – right in my crotch. it was just fat that was poking through the tear, and it never hurt. i rode as normal til i got it stitched…

I've already got a consultation booked at the hospital for next month with a specialist – apparently the odds are they'll operate and have done with it.

MrK mkII – that's where my previous one and this one is.

I had a standard 'mesh' repair to an inguinal hernia (crotch bit where front of leg joins torso) a few years ago. TBH it was more comfortable before having the repair! When I went to visit GP >12 months after the op' complaining of slight discomfort and numbness/sensitivity around the area I was waved away as suffering with minor dysesthesia associated to the incision rejoining and the nerves being sensitive. It's still the same >2 years later but doesn't bother me.

I've never had a problem cycling, but be careful and discuss the likelihood of rupture caused by MTBing with your GP.

Take care & get well soon.

I've been riding (and running, horse riding, snowboarding) with mine for 2 years now. It does ache a bit sometimes but is mostly fine. Its slowly getting bigger though (was small to start with) so I think it won't be long before I have to get it fixed.

My story is very similar to Nixie's,but mine's been fixed and it's been problem-free since the op.

Mine wasn't a problem before or after being fixed. Just be sensible!
