Is it just me, or does having 8000 Olympic torches seem like overkill?

What’s wrong with just handing the torch over to the next person, thereby saving the cost of 7999 torches – imagine the chaos if every team in the 4*100 metres relay had 4 batons each (not to mention the scope for cheating)

I’m beginning to understand why the games are overbudget.
