Yes, the time has come for my backwater of technology to join the 20th century and get FTTC. The date has been set and my fibre router arrived in the post this morning.

Being inquisitive I fired it up at work and was disappointed at the sheer level of no features for configuring any of the stuff that I use at home with my current ADSL. No DHCP config. No static IPs. No QoS, IP blacklisting, the list goes on. Yes it’s free, but I want MOAR!!!

So, given that this is a mountainbike forum, I thought I would ask what people would recommend for a full featured VDSL modem router for home use. Respectable brands preferably.

    Vigor 2850.

Isn’t configuring QoS pointless as it will be dropped at the ASR (or whatever your provider is using)-?

can you switch the box to ‘pass through modem only’ mode and just plug your existing router in to it?

I did that with my Virgin ‘superhub’ when the firmware was really buggy.

    Apparently no, wwaswas:

    Shame.

Watch out for mcast support too.

Sadly, my Netgear doesn’t have a WAN port, so only knows how to talk to ADSL, otherwise I’d be doing that. Also, I need the wireless access point functionality on the single unit because, let’s be honest here, I’m lazy and the box need to go near the master socket.

    Any more ideas?

it should just be a LAN cable between the two but looks like the modem doesn’t support that anyway.

willard? The Vigor has all of that, maybe I’m misunderstanding you here.

Cody, sorry, I looked it up and the one I found didn’t list WiFi on it. I’ll go and read the specs again.

Pretty comprehensive, but I think now superceded?

Yeah, looks like the 2860 is the one to have now. At 200 notes, that’s a lot of cash, especially when this one is only 65 or so.

Actually, scratch that! I want the one called NIGHTHAWK!

Yup its the 2860 now, on one here at the moment, silly amount of uptime and plenty of config options to keep you busy if you like that sort of thing.

6 Port gig switch, 3G/4G backup port, IPv6, QoS and the flexibility of ADSL/VDSL2 did it for me.

    I’ve got one of these

Very good for negotiating long lines and it’s FTTC ready (not that they’ll ever be fibre enabling my cabinet any time soon)
