Scroutes, is Gee being exploited? Might be. Exploited means someone making money from your work unfairly, or making use of a situation unfairly, and objectify means reducing to just being an object.

So unless all the money from that image is going to Gee, then yes he’s being exploited. It doesn’t matter if he’s agreed to it, or has been convinced to take his kit off.

Indeed there is probably nothing you cannot find that human wont do for money somewhere , this fact does not make it OK

You only need to look at the amount of home made skin flicks on the net to show to see that there’s an awful lot of people who like getting naked and being objectified. Those people would probably love to get paid to do what they’re already doing for free. It’s also clear that there’s an awful lot of people who like looking at naked people.

There’s a big difference to objectifying the average man or woman on the street or in your office to professional porn stars.

If the ladies in question were being forced into being ‘objectified’, I would agree with you. But they’re not, they *choose* to pose for Playboy, to be Bunnies – if you like to look at it that way, to objectify themselves.Because of capitalism, monetarism and usury we are all forced to exchange our time/labour for currency (if we don’t wanna starve and die). Being able to choose somewhat the main activity you do to enable the banksters to vampirically leach off you does not make it a free choice.

From looking at various other web sites it would appear that the people of STW are fighting a loosing battle…. Remember lots of teenagers also like biking and this sort of video would appeal to them. STW and it’s members are a very small part of the biking scene

Red Bull do not make videos to promote “cycling” – they make action sports videos to promote their media house and brand, which serves as the marketing vehicle to generate revenue through drink sales.

Videos, sporting events etc all generate the crucial exposure that makes the money to support our sport and and many others.

Danny Mac and all the other Red Bull athletes sign an agreement, pretty much as an employee. Their image rights, activity etc all become the property of Red Bull in return for some not bad money as well as exposure boost which in turn also boosts earning opportunities with their other sponsors. Remember, an action sports athlete’s working lifetime is much shorter than the average career.

From Danny Mac’s point of view – his bosses want him to do this. They pay him so he says yes.

From Red Bull’s point of view – fit girls and bike stunts will drive big traffic and big brand awareness beyond the confines of just an action sports audience, generating a sales uplift.

From the Playboy bunnies’ point of view – they continue to get paid in their chosen profession.

Everyone wins here. Except the handwringers, but to be fair, they’d find someone else to be offended on behalf of if this wasn’t here.

Sadly PB tends only to be known for the girls, but editorial content, features etc are all of a very high calibre, definitely higher quality than GQ, Esquire etc. But let’s not let the facts cloud a good uninformed outraged online argument eh?!?!?! 😉
