    Morning Folks,

It turns out im off to NYC for a few days in May.

Rather than being caught up in the whole tourist thing…does anyone know of any cool areas, good bars, know of any restaurants, night clubs etc that are off the beaten track??

I’m going to be based in the southern area if that helps!!

    Thanks in advance!

There’s been a couple of threads in the last 6 months. Might be worth a quick search. There were some good suggestions. In fact.. click

Of the touristy thigs you should definitely do sunset at the Top of the Rock – we did it on a clear day and it was chuffing spectacular, easily in my top 5 sunsets:

    Cool bars we went to:

PDT – Please Don’t Tell – hidden entrance though a phone booth inside a Hot Dog joint (booking is essential)
The Back Room – one of the last remaining original speakeasies – Lower East side

Junior’s cheesecake in Brooklyn is pretty freaking amazing.

I’d also recommend taking in a show on Broadway, I was reticent to say the least but got convinced/guilted into it and actually really enjoyed Mathilda (written by Tim Minchin)

If you want to see a show and don’t want to join a huge queue in Times Square there is a second last-minute ticket office in Brooklyn. You’d have to Google it but it worked a treat for us, one quick round trip and we got tickets for a show the same night with no queuing…

La Esquina Mexican bar & restaurant in lower Manhattan/Little Italy. coolest place ive ever been to anyway!

its a grubby taco joint at street level, but if you have reservations in the restaurant a maitre d will collect you and whisk you off downstairs through back corridors and kitchens Goodfellas style into the main tequila lounge and dining area! proper.

Just got back a couple of days ago, no recommendations on bars as the Mrs doesn’t drink but in terms of shows, we saw ‘It Shoulda Been You’. It’s a new one, and we took a risk on it as we’d not read anything about it. Would highly recommend, very funny. Don’t read anything other than ‘official’ pages for it so you don’t ruin the plot..! Other than that we just did tourist things as it was the first time there…
As far as tickets go, we queued at Times Square. The people at the very front had been there since 2, we arrived about 2.30, by 3 when the booth opened the queue was very long. We got seen about 3.20 so 50 minutes queuing.
