popped a new shimano cassette on this evening (forgive me but i’ve been ss for years so been a while) and put base unit (ie the bit with several cogs in a set) at the back then spacers and cogs before putting the lockring on. However it didn’t sound right when i spun it and looked like the base unit it looked like it was clipping the spokes. So I took out the silver thin spacer thing I’d put in next to the lockring (i’d assumed it went there) and put it at the back. everything seems fine now, did I do good?

It was a second hand cassette so not in order and there is still a wafer thin spacer between lockring and last cog.

The little 1mm spacer on a 10 speed cassette? That goes behind the cassette yes.

Sounds like you may benefit from reading a good bike maintenance book. The Park Big Blue Book may be a good idea.
