HowFoot lodge in Grasmere is pretty darn good. Nice place to stay, good italian restaurant next door, easy walk into Grasmere and 10min bus ride to Ambleside. Loads of walking from the doorstep but never stayed there with bikes

Tower Bank Arms at Far Sawrey is nice. Lower prices in winter, cracking pub and walkable to the Windemere ferry.

I am a big fan of Compston House in Ambleside – it’s a bit unique, run by the most friendly people on Earth and they will feed you until you pop!

Used it a few times prior to living in the area and keep threatening to use it for a weekend away again sometime even if Ambleside is now only 20 odd miles up the road!

    This place is my favouriteplace

We’ve stayed there a good few times. A bit more put of the way than the usual lakes spots. RIchard who runs the place is a top bloke. A fine selection of beers and a top notch, not too pricey restaurant for the evening. Lovely rooms and roaring log fire or when you get in from walking/riding. Whats not to like?

Not sure about the “upmarket” bit, but I’ve had nice stays at both of these in Keswick…

I’ve just got back from a few days at Beckstones Farm Guest House, Thornthwaite, Keswick. Had one of the self catering bits, was very nice and comfy, but they have B&B aswell. Walked and rode straight from the door.

Another shout for the Masons Arms here.

Myself and Mrs G spent an extremely pleasurable weekend in one of their cottages a couple of years back. She loved the food, the setting, the decor and the atmosphere…..I quite liked the beers 🙂

We’ll be going back once the littlest one is old enough to dump with the in-laws for the weekend.

+1 for the Punch Bowl. I’ve not stayed there before, but had a lovely lunch there a couple of years ago, and I am thinking about going for a long weekend later this year.

Another vote for Compston House B&B in Ambleside, although the owners changed just before xmas and moved to Devon, so it is now under new management – not been back since.

Used Cumbrian cottages lots over the years but using heartofthelakes this feb for a week (family of 4). They are cheaper plus you get complimentary access to a leisure club in the price.

I would just say – suggesting the Punch Bowl is a little tricky as there are several establishments of that name around the Lakes 😉

I am guessing you mean the one at Crossthwaite as that is very, very nice indeed….
