  • New Years Resolution. To become an expert in…??

So for my New Years resolution I have decided that by the end of 2016 I want to be an expert in something. Now when I say expert that is obviously tongue in cheek but I would expert to be extremely knowledgeable or capable in what ever the chosen subject is.

So what suggestions for a subject matter to you have? I am open to anything but don’t really fancy learning a language or a musical instrument.

I’d get a lathe and a mill off ebay and learn how to use them properly.

Aim to end up with a small i/c engine at the end of the year?

How about learning a programming language. Though possibly a bit boring unless you’re exceptionally geeky or pursuing a career.

You could go to the opposite end of the spectrum too and learn some survival skills. Local courses seem popular these days.

Well I’m going to trap out the old adage that it takes 10000 hours of quality practise to become an expert in anything. There are 8760 hours in a year.

Other than that, pick something that interests you.

Do you ever watch Mastermind ? That is some Olympic level expertise in some very narrow subjects. Catch a few shows for some inspiration.

Or catch them all and become an expert on it.

In 2016 I aim to get to at least level 1 coaching certificate for Crossfit, level 2 if I can swing it. I also plan to get my CISSP (finally).

    That should do me.

I’d like to perfect the art of doing a manual.

Judging by the water leak that has appeared during this festive period, in a ceiling in one of the houses on the estate I look after, I’m going to learn how to plaster a ceiling. Whether I become ‘expert’ at it will probably depend upon how much ceiling I will need to remove to find and make good the leak 😀

No matter how much time you devote to this there’ll be at least a handfull of other STWers that are more expert than you.

What do you actually want to do? Do that.

It’s a load of old bobbins, though.
