  • New rings for XTR 960

As above looking for some new rings for XTR 960 chainset after some horrific chainsuck today in the mud…

I understand they are 104 PCD – will any 104 PCD rings fit or have shimano done something to ensure only their rings will fit?

Also any recomendations as to rings to replace them with?

Try Middleburn, a lot cheaper than Shimano

I was going to get Blackspire, but ended up replacing the crank as the rings are just silly money.

Outer is 146mm, middle 102 and granny is 64mm so although you don’t have to buy Shimano rings you do need to buy M960 specific rings from whichever manufacturer you chose.

I can recommend Middleburn hardcoat; I’ve had several sets. Last longer than Shimano, but are slightly less sweet shifting. Much, much cheaper though.

I’ve used all three. Currently using Blackspire and I would say they give much better shifting than Middleburn but not as good as XTR. Longevity with Blackspire is excellent as well, 6 months use and they show little signs of wear.

Why do Shimano keep doing that? Changing the standards, introducing exclusive sizings, etc.

And HOW much for a chainring?? A **** chainring?????

Time for a Shimano boycott. They take the piss.

These are old cranks, they don’t make them anymore.

You go ahead and boycott, my bike won’t work without the lovely big S components. 😉
