Hey all bought a new car a couple weeks back but apparently the dealer only had the one key (would post through if they found any extra wasn’t to chuffed).

Looking to get a second key since just having the one panics me slightly!

Looks like official channels will cost me around £200 for an extra key…

    a. is this right (as we already have one key which works)
    b. any none official routes? Hate to be one of those scabby people but annoyed I didn’t ask if they had 2 keys after I gave the dealer my money 😳 anyone used this guys? http://www.keysinthepost.com/

I got one made for a ’52 plate at Timpsons, was still £75. That was a non-remote key but obviously had the immobilizer/transponder thingmy.

It’s not as good as an extra key, but it’s straightforward to recode a second keyfob, which at least gets you in if you manage to leave the keys in the boot or something. Cost me £3 for a key from a scrapped car (that was on a ’55 Mondeo but the process seems to be the same for your Focus, lots of fannying around with the key.

I’d go back to where you bought it from and ask them for a goodwill gesture as it wasn’t mentioned at any point upto the time of handover that there was only one key. If you’d do the same to them with a PX they’d adjust the price (was your PX in good condition?). Ask them at the very least for the key at cost.

I’d get one sooner rather than later- RARE to lose one but if you did you’d be stuffed if you only had one key in the household/lost whilst out.

Ford only supply one key with a remote and another without.

Not quite. depends on the car. My 06 Focus has one remote, one not. My 09 Mondeo has two remotes.

I had this problem with a 55 plate focus. It is possible to buy the electronic bit of the key and the blank metal ‘key’ section from somewhere like Ebay. You then need to get a specialist to code the transponder to your immobiliser.

Bolton Lock Compnay did mine for about £35, but you need to take your car to them. It’s expensive for about 10 mins work, but I got a fully working remote key that did the doors, boot and immobiliser for a total of about £50. A lot of money for a key, but a lot cheaper than Ford.

sorry didn’t mention not after a remote just literally another key for myself. My car’s the Style model so doesn’t have the remote transponder (think that’s the word).

So I’ll be able to buy a key from other places but only ford/specialist garage will be able to program it to work with my car?

I believe all keys have the transponder in them. It’s what turns the inbuilt immobiliser off.

Ford still wanted a huge amount of money just to code my key, plus they wanted the car for a day.

If you don’t need the remote, you need something like this:

    Key without remote

Bolton Lock Co did the job in about 10 mins. They plug their gadget into the cars computer, put the old and new keys into the ignition, press a few buttons and they were done.

Any good locksmith that deals with cars should be able to do it.

got a normal auto locksmith out to my van, he did a new ford key in about 30mins. Under 100notes. Its a simple recode of a blank if you have the kit.

Recode on mine is 6 blips of the key in 4 seconds – hear a chime.

Press any button on remote to mate to the car.

Tis 2001 so did they change for the new model?

I would ask the Dealer you got it from to help with this especially as it was not mentioned when setting the deal.

Hopefully they will help you as a goodwill gesture.

I don’t want to hijack the thread, but have you thought who could have the other key ? My mate bought a car and only had one key and tried to contact the previous owner to see if they had it but was unsuccessful as it was a leasing company.

If your V5 is with you, try to get hold of them but then again they could lie about not having it and come and get he car 😯

Car was previously owned by the Glaswegian police…. I trust them (plus based in Plymouth) 😆

Shall let you know how I get on!

Right well that cancels out that worry then 😀

Probably no chance of getting the key off them as it will have been through Auction and probably a dealer etc so could have gone AWOL anywhere along the line.

Good luck getting sorted. Any chance you can update this thread when you get sorted for future reference ?

    Cheers

That codes the remote but does it allow the car to start?

So after phoning up ford to double check prices confirmed it would be about 200. Thought I’d just check out Thompson’s as a last ditch attempt walked out with a key which both unlocks and starts my focus for £25… Job done, madness!
