My current helmet has been used for 10+ years so looking for new one.

Is it just a question of trying different sorts on and seeing which one fits best and go with that or shoudl I be looking for specific features?

Giro Hex, great helmet and a bargain too!

Agree with MrC, go for the Hex.

I was in the same position as you last year, and was recommended the Hex by my LBS. The vents are designed for max air throughput at low speed (for mtb), where as a lot of others have a more streamlined vent system better suited to roadies.

Hex has been really comfortable and a great price.

    Yes.

Low-speed venting is all fine and dandy but if he doesn't have a Giro-shaped head then he will be very uncomfortable.

Yes, forget to add that. Don't just buy online based on a recommendation! Always try it out at LBS, even if you buy online later.

I thought I was going to buy the Hex, but it didn't fit as well as the Bell Slant I ended up with (which was also £20 cheaper).

Thanks will take a look at my LBS and see what they got. I think only Specialised ones.

I think What MB had a review of helmets and a Specialised tactic I think was well thought of.

Cant see the difference between this and the instinct.

make sure you can't easily rock it off your swede when everything is adjusted and that you can get one finger comfortably through the chin strap. then just go pay. what price keeping the grey stuff between your ears?
halfords will have giro and a few others. the hex IS a great helmet ( i am on my second ) but as above, only if it fits.

You can pick up the Fox Flux for less than 50 notes now. I love mine, very comfy. The rear spoiler is removable.

I have a big head and found it difficult to get helmets to fit properly so I endorse trying them on before you buy, but the Specialized tactic I eventually bought in large fits really well and is very comfortable

Damn! Of Course. Halfords. I completely forgot about them!

Went all the way out to Evans at Braehead and there's about three or four Halfords I could get to in the same distance.

Oh well. Never mind. Got a Scott Karma for £35, down from £70.
    Not a bad result then.
