   We're after a new front door, incl frame & fittings. I'm a pretty handy DIYer, but this is a step too much for me.

   Yale can fit us a composite front door & frame in the colour we want for about £840 incl VAT. This seems quite reasonable to me being as the parts alone are about £700 from B&Q. We've looked in a couple of other places and they are on about £1000+ from one and £360 just for the fitting from another.
   I'm toying with getting a local firm to look at it as well, but I reckon they'll struggle to match Yale
   (We DO NOT want UPVC)

   What does the all-knowing STW say?

   200 quid plus for a hardwood door

   hardware about 120,

   frame abnout 50,

   fitting of the above, about 160

   I'm a pretty handy DIYer, but this is a step too much for me.

   Get a pre-hung door set then, and do it yourself. You can get them with all the locks and letter plate already fitted. Cutting out your old frame and fitting a new one should be straightforward enough - unless there are issues with plaster, flooring, cavity walls, etc, .... are there ?

   I've got an internal door you can have for nowt, if you want to come and collect it. Brand new unpainted; slight bit of damage on one corner, but nowt serious.

   £850 about 15 years ago. Fitted and primed.

   Thanks to the police procedure that says crowbar the wood before trying to break glass in case someone gets cut. Still bitter about it considering it was over a leaking pipe and i was in the pub down the road (as the get of a neighbour rightly knew).

   Ernie, no it's not a job for me. If I can't do it in a day I'm buggered and I'm happy to pay to have it done

   OK fair enough, although if it's all straightforward, ie, old frame out and new frame in, then you'd easily do it in a day. After all, you only need to plumb up and fix 5 screws either side.

   so you want a composite door made of plastic and bits of wood, and possibly a metal facing.

    Well, the composite ones seem to tick all the boxes, mainly security & ease of care (Don't need treating or painting)
    Our current door is a) Buggered b) Ugly c) Not very secure.

    So far I'm very tempted by Yale. A door similar to that one I've just posted is £575 on eBay.....

    I think we'll probably get a local tradesman round for a quote though, but it's a competitive price from Yale he'll have to beat.

    My mum had a new-type composite door fitted recently. The whole frame was replaced, and it is far more secure, with deadbolts and all that, but...

    ..it looks really cheap and nasty up close. She's not happy.

    Go see a few local lads and ask them about a rockdoor. You'll probably get one fitted for about the same.
    I've put loads in, they really are easy and excellent quality

    We had new doors fitted last year, front door is red composite with yale locks and security rated. Cost £800 fitted by a local quality company. Very happy.
